The Heisman Trophy Trust is expected to strip Reggie Bush of his 2005 honor after an investigation reportedly revealed Bush accepted improper benefits. The Trust will leave the award vacant. Vince Young finished second that year. If you were Young, would you want the trophy? Absolutely. The Trust is basically saying Bush didn't exist in 2005, and if that actually had been the case, then Young would have won hands down. It's a little late, but they should give Young a chance to hoist that trophy.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Matt Leinart and Matt Schaub stood next to each other for the final few snaps, Leinart in a sling and Schaub in a walking boot. The scene spoke volumes about Houston's quarterback situation and playoff chances. If the Texans are going to make the playoffs for the first time in franchise history, they probably will have to do it with a third-string quarterback. Leinart injured his throwing shoulder Sunday at Jacksonville, overshadowing Houston's 20-13 victory against the inept Jaguars.

Heisman Trophy winner Matt Leinart yesterday said he would return for his senior season at Southern California to try to lead the Trojans to a third straight national championship. The quarterback announced his decision to complete his eligibility rather than enter the NFL draft. "I realized the opportunity right now to support my family by going to the NFL early," Leinart said. "But, to me, I think college football and this whole atmosphere here and being with my fans and my teammates is ultimately more satisfying and will make me happier than any amount of money could make someone happy.

HOUSTON - Matt Schaub missed Houston's 2011 playoff run with an injured foot. Now the Texans' quarterback, who starred at West Chester East High School, is healthy and looking forward to his first playoff start Saturday against the Cincinnati Bengals. The wild-card playoff game offers Schaub a chance to redeem himself after he threw two interceptions in last week's loss to Indianapolis, which kept Houston from getting a first-round bye and home-field advantage throughout the AFC playoffs.

Matt Leinart was favored to win the Heisman Trophy, but when it happened last night, when Southern California's quarterback became the 70th Heisman winner, Leinart acknowledged he wasn't prepared. "I still can't even speak right now," he said about an hour later, after walking into the news conference holding the trophy by its ankles. "When they called the name, I just kind of dropped. My legs were weak. My heart was beating 20 beats a second. " For the second time in three years, a quarterback from Southern California took top honors.

Bill Parcells says he's happy to have Terrell Owens on the Dallas Cowboys. "I don't view it as a gamble," the coach said yesterday. "It's in my best interest that he's successful. And it's in his best interest that he's successful. ... I'm not approaching this with the idea it's going to be adversarial or I'm going to be mandating every little thing this player does. " Parcells usually keeps a low profile in the off-season, but he took it to an extreme this year, especially with the scrutiny surrounding the signing of Owens and questions about whether owner Jerry Jones made the move with his coach's consent.

Heisman Trophy winner Matt Leinart will be back for his senior season at Southern California and try to lead the Trojans to an unprecedented third straight national championship. The USC quarterback announced his decision yesterday, opting to complete his eligibility rather than enter the NFL draft, where he figured to be one of the top selections and become an instant millionaire. "I realized the opportunity right now to support my family by going to the NFL early, but to me I think college football and this whole atmosphere here and being with my fans and my teammates . . . is ultimately more satisfying and will make me happier than any amount of money could make someone happy," he said.

Southern California officials are investigating whether an upscale apartment that wide receiver Dwayne Jarrett shared with former teammate Matt Leinart violated NCAA rules, according to a published report yesterday. Leinart's father, Bob, put the duo on the lease at the secured apartment complex downtown after Leinart moved out of his residence near campus because he was constantly hounded by fans. Leinart - the Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback picked 10th by the Arizona Cardinals in the NFL draft Saturday - and Jarrett each paid $650 a month for the apartment that cost $3,866 a month, according to the Los Angeles Times.

TWO PEOPLE familiar with the decision told the Associated Press yesterday that the Cowboys and Redskins will lose salary-cap space over the next two seasons because they paid exorbitant amounts 2 years ago to get more spending room for the upcoming season. Both people spoke on condition of anonymity because the league did not identify the teams. Both teams say they complied with NFL rules during the uncapped year. ESPN reported that the Redskins will lose $36 million in space, and the Cowboys will forfeit $10 million.

MATT LEINART'S return to the NFL lasted less than a half, and coach Gary Kubiak says the Texans will sign another quarterback this week. Perhaps even Brett Favre will be in the mix. Leinart will be placed on injured reserve after fracturing his left collarbone in the second quarter of Houston's 20-13 win in Jacksonville on Sunday. The lefthanded Leinart was making his first start since 2009 in place of Matt Schaub, who broke a bone in his right foot Nov. 13. Kubiak says Leinart will have surgery within the next week, and Schaub is due to have surgery tomorrow to repair a Lisfranc injury.

Kevin Kolb called it "the situation," as if being stripped of his starting job only to regain it - for however long - could be summed up so succinctly. During the last six months, Kolb has rolled through the gamut of emotions. He was downright giddy when Andy Reid named him the Eagles' starting quarterback after trading Donovan McNabb to the Washington Redskins. He was crushed after losing the job to Michael Vick, who played dynamically in Kolb's stead after Kolb suffered a concussion in the second quarter of the season opener against Green Bay. And now, with Vick on the shelf with a chest injury, Kolb is back as the Eagles' starter this week against San Francisco.

Cardinals go with rookie Today we offer a tale of three quarterbacks and the ever-changing fortunes of sports. Consider Max Hall, an undrafted rookie out of BYU who will start for the 2-2 Arizona Cardinals this weekend against the Super Bowl champion New Orleans Saints. How he got there was a matter as simple as dominoes falling one after another. The first to fall was Matt Leinart, a Heisman Trophy winner out of USC who was the 10th selection in the 2006 draft. Leinart was released before the regular season even started.

It's going to take more. To anyone inside the Arizona Cardinals' locker room who asked, that is what Kurt Warner told them about what it takes to win in the postseason. Warner knows. Although it seems like a lifetime ago, he used to own the playoffs, back when he was the trigger man for the Greatest Show on Turf. Warner has the hardware, the Super Bowl ring, the two league MVP trophies, and the priceless experience so many in the Cardinals' young locker room lack. Although his path to this NFC championship game has been a jagged arrow since he last hoisted the Lombardi Trophy on Jan. 30, 2000, Warner is the same man. Still lethal in the pocket.
