IN THE 10 drafts since the Phillies selected Cole Hamels, including this year, they have been without a true first-round pick five times. The Phillies' first pick will come in the compensatory round for the second consecutive year when they make their initial selection Monday night at No. 40 overall. While the Phillies might have had a few misses, many of their high picks have panned out for other teams after being used to pull off trades for Roy Halladay, Cliff Lee, Brad Lidge and others.

TAMPA, Fla. - Antonio Bastardo sat in the visiting clubhouse at George M. Steinbrenner Field and kept pounding his left arm, which was wrapped in ice, with his right fist. "I was feeling more power," Bastardo said. He pounded his arm again. "I was feeling on top of the ball," he said, "and I felt the whip of the ball. " That is a relief for the Phillies, who may have one less bullpen question. Bastardo started Friday's 13-9 Phillies loss to the Yankees and faced four batters.

TRENTON - Austin Romine is a talented catcher, a real prospect with a real future in the Yankees' organization, producing steadily at Double A Trenton. Austin Romine had no chance yesterday. He led off the Thunder's seventh inning against Brad Lidge, the Phillies' perfect closer during their 2008 World Series run. Lidge dropped two evil sliders that started just off Romine's hip for strikes two and three. They were, perhaps, the best pitches yet on Lidge's long road toward the Phillies' pitching staff.
