IN THE 10 drafts since the Phillies selected Cole Hamels, including this year, they have been without a true first-round pick five times. The Phillies' first pick will come in the compensatory round for the second consecutive year when they make their initial selection Monday night at No. 40 overall. Lidge dropped two evil sliders that started just off Romine's hip for strikes two and three. They were, perhaps, the best pitches yet on Lidge's long road toward the Phillies' pitching staff.
