Miss America gives back Recently crowned Miss America Kira Kazantsev says she will devote her reign to raising awareness about domestic violence, something she has experienced firsthand. The case of NFL player Ray Rice and Meredith Vieira 's revelations about her own experiences have put the topic on the front page, Kira, 23, tells People. "We see it everywhere now. " Abuse had become such a normal part of Kira's world, she was unaware it wasn't a normal way to live.

Well, NBC, replace in haste, repent at leisure. You might have wanted to consider your options a little more carefully before you rushed ahead Friday and anointed Savannah Guthrie as Matt Lauer's new Today deskmate. Let's face it: The deposing of Ann Curry did not go well at all. Public sympathy for her was far greater than you had projected. Worse, many were casting Lauer, your morning monarch, as the heavy in all this, the egotistical divo who sabotaged his innocent coworker.

A weeping, apologetic Ann Curry, 55, on Thursday told Today viewers she is leaving her post as cohost of the NBC morning program. "For all of you who saw me as a groundbreaker, I'm sorry I couldn't carry the ball over the finish line, but man, I did try," she said. "I will keep trying and I'm so sorry I turned into a sob sister this morning. " Curry replaced the much-loved Meredith Vieira — who quit to care for her ailing husband — only a year ago, but she has been with Today as a correspondent since 1997.

"He has very bad days," Meredith Vieira tells AARP The Magazine of her husband, news producer Richard M. Cohen , who has multiple sclerosis. "He's so funny; he'll say, 'I'm in control. I hate my life, but I'm in control,' " she says. "It's good that he vents. He's having a [very bad] day, and what is he going to do, pretend that he's not? But then he'll soldier on. " Vieira, 57, left the Today show in June to spend time with her husband of 25 years and their three kids, Benjamin Edwin , Gabriel Anthony , and Lily Max . Cohen, 63, was diagnosed with MS when he was 25. A decade ago, he also survived two bouts of colon cancer.

Matt Lauer called it "a very bittersweet Wednesday morning" as he and the rest of the staff and crew on NBC's Today said goodbye to Meredith Vieira . It was lavish and emotional. There was a touching clip retrospective of Vieira's five years on the show. She was serenaded by Carole King and Jack Black . And there were heartfelt testimonials from coworkers Lauer, Al Roker , Ann Curry (who is replacing Vieira), and Natalie Morales . The highlight: An extended song-and-sprint which had Vieira running all over the set to Journey 's "Don't Stop Believin'.

Maybe it's an East Coast/West Coast thing. Actors on entertainment series in La-La Land have traditionally negotiated for salary bumps behind closed doors. With New York news anchors it's more of a blood sport, with both sides - the network and the talking head - parrying in the press. This week, Meredith Vieira showed she is a force to be reckoned with. First, it was "leaked" that she is leaning toward leaving Today when her contract expires in September. This is the standard opening ploy, orchestrated by the anchor's agent.

AZUKA Theatre Company's artistic director, Kevin Glaccum , taped an episode of "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire" in New York on Friday. He's sworn to secrecy about how he did on the show, which won't air until spring, but told us it was "a really amazing experience. " He was happy that "Project Runway" host Tim Gunn was filling in for Meredith Vieira ; not that he has a problem with Vieira, but he's a huge Gunn fan. It isn't Glaccum's first time on a game show. On vacation last week I checked into a rustic lodge while hiking in the mountains ("Valderi, valdera") and was immediately struck with a sense of foreboding. It took me a few seconds to realize what was wrong: no television. I began tearing the cabin apart looking for hidden consoles. Come on, people. This is the 21st century. How can there be a hotel room without a TV set? There are pencils that get 70 channels. Five minutes after my fruitless search, I was curled up in a fetal position on the floor, trembling and tearfully singing the theme song to The Courtship of Eddie's Father to comfort myself.

So Meredith Vieira is giddy, and Katie Couric has taken to dressing like a nun. We notice these things because they're paid, exorbitantly, to be noticed. Couric and Vieira are being marketed like rock stars, which, in a medium surprisingly short of them, they are. Their debuts were reviewed like opening nights, as though they were one-shot deals, when the point is to build enduring audience loyalty. Their appearance and behavior are surgically dissected, too, demonstrating, yet again, that women are held to higher standards, and more criticism, than men. Some analysts see the moves as risky, when they are anything but. It seems obvious - expensive, but obvious - to hire morning television's largest personality to anchor the evening news, or shift one popular morning host to another program.
