Pvt. Isaac Clark wrote a letter on Sept. 16, 1862, the day before he would witness the bloodiest day in American history - the battle at Antietam, in which more than 22,000 Union and Confederate soldiers were killed or wounded. "We now occupy the Battle Field and still a number of dead rebles lays around," he wrote to Lizzie Brick of Hurffville about the skirmishes at Crampton's Gap, Md., where corpses were left in heaps for more than two days before being cleared away. "The boys was at work all day yesterday a bureying the dead but did not get them all buried.

Water was bad; fire was worse. In a single conflagration at the height of the North Dakota flooding last month, flames destroyed the newsroom of the Grand Forks Herald, the voice of that beleaguered North Dakota town on the banks of the Red River. Notes and files and records - all gone. And the Herald's library archives - reports and dispatches spanning 120 years of life on the harsh prairie - were incinerated beyond recognition in a few hours. "It just makes me feel like I want to cry," Jenelle Stadstad, library manager, said a few days later.
