After the 76ers set a new franchise standard for futility by losing 17 consecutive games to start the season, a loss to one of the NBA's elite teams may not seem like a big deal. But it's how they lost that pains the Sixers. They blew an 18-point, fourth-quarter advantage en route to suffering a 120-115 overtime embarrassment to the Memphis Grizzlies Saturday night at the Wells Fargo Center. "That is a cruel loss. That is a very cruel loss," Sixers coach Brett Brown said. The setback dropped the Sixers to 2-21 and extended their recent losing streak to three games.

Bat night No, it wasn't about baseball in San Antonio on Halloween night - it was a real, live flying rodent. A bat went flapping around the AT&T Center Saturday night and twice interrupted play before Manu Ginobili decided to end the sideshow. Late in the first quarter of what would eventually become a 113-94 rout over the Sacramento Kings, the San Antonio guard tracked the bat with his eyes, then used a long lefthanded swat that netted the creature and slammed it to the floor.

Is Greg Oden leaving Ohio State for the NBA? Oden's father told a newspaper the 7-footer is turning pro, while the man who hopes to be Oden's agent, Mike Conley Sr., said last night that the decision had not been made. "No. Definitely not. Not to say he's not going to decide that - but, 100 percent, as of this moment, he hasn't decided," Conley, father of Oden's high school and college teammate Mike Conley Jr., told the Associated Press. Mike Conley thinks he's the best jumper in the world. Better than Mike Powell. Better than Carl Lewis. Better even than Michael Jordan. Last night, in the city where Christopher Columbus towers over the harbor, Conley might have proved his point. He nearly jumped off the end of the earth. Conley clinched the triple jump gold medal on his second attempt when he nearly ended up in the pit before his third leap and broke the Olympic record. But he wasn't through. He was rockin'.

It's the hardest position to fill adequately in the NBA, and that includes center. You can score and defend down low with power forwards, but finding a true point guard to run your offense and get his teammates not only open shots but also easy shots is almost impossible. There are a handful of prospects this year who might be able to handle that toughest of assignments. Here is a look at point guards available in Thursday's NBA draft. These rankings are based on conversations with pro and college coaches, NBA general managers, scouts and player personnel directors.

SOMETIMES THE game of basketball is an easy one. If you can set hard picks, cut hard to the basket, take care of the ball and get to where you're supposed to be on the defensive end in a timely fashion, good things usually happen. For the second straight game all those things were prominent for the 76ers at the start of the game. But good things haven't happened in twos in almost 2 months and the Sixers dropped a 103-100 decision to the visiting Memphis Grizzlies, denying them a second straight win for the first time since Nov. 30. Saturday, coach Doug Collins changed his starting lineup, and it proved beneficial as newly implemented starters Spencer Hawes and Nick Young helped the team jump out to a 12-2 lead in an eventual easy win over the New York Knicks.

Gasol scored 27 points and had seven rebounds as the Grizzlies beat the Sixers, 103-100. He also made the defensive play of the night.
