Amar'e Stoudemire made all seven shots in the first half, Carmelo Anthony passed and shot well, and the New York Knicks shook off the surprising departure of coach Mike D'Antoni to rout the Portland Trail Blazers, 121-79, on Wednesday night at Madison Square Garden, snapping a six-game losing streak. Anthony, who denied wanting a trade or having friction with D'Antoni earlier in the day, had 16 points on 6-of-12 shooting and tied a season high with seven assists. Stoudemire finished with 17 points and shot 8 of 10 before both stars sat out the fourth quarter while the Knicks rang up their highest point total of the season.

NEW YORK - Here is a good sign for when an overhyped, underachieving team has believed too many stories about how good it should be. After the New York Knicks dropped their fourth straight on Friday night, center Tyson Chandler described the Knicks' issues like this: "If we play the way we finished the last two games, we'll beat teams by 15 to 20 points. I don't see a team in this league that can sustain that kind of effort. I feel like we may have the deepest team in the league.

NEW YORK - Here is a good sign for when an overhyped, underachieving team has believed too many stories about how good it should be. After the New York Knicks dropped their fourth straight on Saturday night, center Tyson Chandler described the Knicks' issues like this: "If we play the way we finished the last two games, we'll beat teams by 15 to 20 points. I don't see a team in this league that can sustain that kind of effort. I feel like we may have the deepest team in the league.

JEREMY LIN checked back in, triggering the wave of cheers that accompany his every move at Madison Square Garden. This time, they were for the guys leaving the game. Lin had 19 points and 13 assists and Carmelo Anthony scored 22, but the New York Knicks turned around this one with their reserves to beat the Cleveland Cavaliers, 120-103, last night. "I think our second unit did an awesome job," Lin said. "I think we've been talking a lot about our depth and tonight we definitely got to see the depth, and so that's going to be a strength of ours and we need to continue to use that.

Knicks coach Mike D'Antoni can smile over the addition of shot blocker Tyson Chandler to a frontline that already boasts Carmelo Anthony and Amar'e Stoudemire. And while he shouldn't expect to get much defense out of Richard Hamilton, Chicago coach Tom Thibodeau will be much happier to have the Coatesville native rather than Keith Bogans playing opposite MVP point guard Derrick Rose. But while the first and sixth seeds, respectively, appear to be among teams that have improved their roster, Sixers coach Doug Collins, runner-up to Thibodeau last season in coach of the year balloting, doesn't have any new toys to tinker with.

Mike D'Antoni said he wants to remain as coach of the New York Knicks, according to a report. "I love what I do. I like my guys so it's all good," D'Antoni told ESPNNewYork.com yesterday, a day after the Knicks clinched a playoff spot. "Again, I'm not focused on that per se [but] hypothetically . . . I'd love to. " The website reported that D'Antoni's agent Warren LeGaries was at practice yesterday and was seen talking with team president and general manager Donnie Walsh. D'Antoni has 1 year remaining on a 4-year, $24 million deal.

In the visitors' locker room at the Wachovia Center, while his teammates pulled on their uniforms, Stephon Marbury, in black Converse and jeans, typed on his BlackBerry. From 2004-07, Marbury, the face of a failing New York Knicks franchise, started every game he played. Last night, coach Mike D'Antoni, who is in his first season with the Knicks, placed the 31-year-old Marbury on the inactive list for their game against the 76ers. In New York's first game, a 120-115 win over the Heat on Wednesday, Marbury was active but did not play.

The American Olympic team may be the world's best basketball team and possibly one for the ages. Last night, the U.S. team finally drained some three-point shots and forced defending world-champion Spain into an embarrassing stream of turnovers. The United States, showing all kinds of moves, increased its lead in every quarter before walking out of the Olympic Basketball Gymnasium with a 119-82 victory. Asked what kind of message the team is sending, Kobe Bryant said, "That we're here to play.

There are about 25 NBA teams that would love to have the Phoenix Suns' "problems. " The Suns lead the Pacific Division, again, with an 18-8 record entering play Friday. They have three perennial all-stars in Steve Nash, Shawn Marion and Amare Stoudemire, and added another former all-star in Grant Hill for next to nothing last summer. They play the league's most entertaining style, at coach Mike D'Antoni's insistence, forcing tempo behind Nash's wizardry at the point. And Phoenix regularly sells out in front of an always-sympathetic home crowd at US Airways Arena.

Thursday, Steve Nash did something you might think very un-Nashian. He got all up in Boris Diaw's grill. "I had to yell a couple of times at Boris tonight," he said. "I don't like to be a screamer, but I think it's important this time of year, when we haven't played well, to be a little more self-critical of our team. I'm always supportive, but sometimes I think you've got to be a little more determined. " See, you all think that Nash is this pacifist/granola guy who would never hurt a fly, because he's soft-spoken and thoughtful.
