INDIANAPOLIS - Mike Krzyzewski and Rick Pitino are finally doing an encore. For the first time since their teams played perhaps the greatest game in the history of the NCAA tournament, Krzyzewski and Pitino will meet in the NCAA tournament Sunday when top-seeded Louisville faces Duke. In the Midwest Regional final, no less. Never mind that few of their current players were even born in 1992. Or that Pitino is no longer at Kentucky, having switched sides in the state's civil war after his brief trip to Boston and the NBA ended badly.

THIS JUST IN: Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski did not hold an early morning practice after his top-ranked Blue Devils got spanked by No. 25 Miami Wednesday. In our social-media-dominated world, in which fact and fiction often overlap, it's sometimes hard to tell the truth from a hoax. File this in the latter category. On Thursday, the Internet was abuzz with stories that Coach K called a grueling practice less than an hour after Duke's plane landed in Durham, N.C. Where would anyone get such a notion?

INDIANAPOLIS - Michigan State coach Tom Izzo and Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski have been teaching young men how to play basketball for decades. On Thursday, they demonstrated why they are so good. They stay loose. Instead of getting tense and out of sorts the day before the Midwest Regional's well-hyped coaching matchup, the pair took turns praising each other's style, their loyalty to their schools and their teams' penchant for limiting mistakes. "I consider him a great friend.

LONDON - The U.S. men's Olympic basketball team needed a while but eventually put on the show fans came to see, beating Tunisia, 110-63, Tuesday night. Finally pulling away when coach Mike Krzyzewski started the reserves to open the second half, the Americans had six players in double figures and improved to 2-0 in the tournament. Krzyzewski insists he planned to start the second unit even before a lackluster first half, and said there was nothing bad about the Americans' performance.

TIME FOR a Herb Magee update. Magee's Philadelphia University basketball squad lost to Boston College, 67-50, Sunday. BC is coached by Steve Donahue, who was once an assistant under Magee at Philly U, a Division II school. BC is Division I, so the game was an exhibition for Magee and did not count against his overall record. The Eagles, however, got a win, but the game didn't count in their RPI. Got all that? Magee still has a two-game lead over Duke's Mike Krzyzewski as the all-time winningest NCAA men's basketball coach.

LONDON - Defiant and defensive, Mike Krzyzewski hardly sounded as if he coaches the best team in the world. He's tired of the criticisms of the U.S. men's Olympic basketball team, fed up with questions about why it isn't as easy for the Americans as it used to be. For more than 13 minutes Tuesday, Krzyzewski fought back against every notion that his squad should never dare find itself in a close game. Now it's time for his players to answer for themselves. The quarterfinals start Wednesday against Australia, the Americans needing three victories - however they get them - to win the gold medal that seems such a foregone conclusion most times, but far from a sure thing during long stretches of their last two games.

MIKE KRZYZEWSKI got his 1,000th career win yesterday, which caused colleague Bob Vetrone Jr., purveyor of all things statistical, to reminisce about the best Big 5 moments he put together a decade ago. Vetrone, aka Boop (follow him on twitter @BoopStats), noted that Krzyzewski's first win in Philly came not as a coach, but as a player. It was Jan. 6, 1968. Coach K was Guard K back then, playing for Bobby Knight at Army against Temple in the first game of Palestra doubleheader (remember those?

IF YOU DON'T think Jabari Parker was destined for stardom, just go back to when he got his first five college scholarship offers for basketball. At the time, Parker was a 6-1 guard. In the fifth grade. Always ahead of his time on the basketball court, Parker has proven to be that way in many other areas also. He is a devout Mormon and a faithful son. And come June 26, he may be a Philadelphia 76er. When it was determined last week at the NBA draft lottery in New York that the Sixers would be getting the No. 3 pick (along with the 10th)

Mike Krzyzewski made the adjustments, stroked the egos and showed some uncharacteristic sideline emotion last night in guiding Duke to its second consecutive NCAA basketball title. "Coach, all he did was challenge us at halftime to play better," Grant Hill said. "We were making mental mistakes. " It was the second time in this Final Four that Duke made major halftime adjustments. The first time, the Blue Devils defeated Indiana and Krzyzewski's mentor, Bob Knight. The second time, Krzyzewski was rewarded with another title.

MIKE KRZYZEWSKI'S college basketball teams have won 999 games. His Duke teams have won four national championships, been to 11 Final Fours, won 12 ACC regular-season titles and 13 ACC Tournaments. He was also the head coach for the USA when it won two Olympic gold medals and two world championships. Two years ago, Rick Pitino called him "our John Wooden. " Coach K can get win No. 1,000 as early as Sunday against St. John's. Nobody is ever going to touch Wooden's 10 national titles because the game has changed so much from the 1960s and 1970s.

Amile Jefferson understands one key to any success as a Duke basketball player. "Eating almost became like a job," the Friends' Central graduate said in a recent phone interview. Jefferson will never be mistaken for a brawny type, but Blue Devils coach Mike Krzyzewski believes the 6-foot-9 sophomore is an important part of the puzzle. New stars Jabari Parker and Rodney Hood will get the headlines and the highest expectations on a team ranked fourth nationally in the preseason Associated Poll.

MIKE KRZYZEWSKI has decided to remain coach of the U.S. men's Olympic basketball team. Krzyzewski will try to lead the Americans to a third straight gold medal, a person with knowledge of the decision said yesterday. Originally expected to step down, Krzyzewski will hold a news conference to confirm his return today at Duke, the person told the Associated Press on condition of anonymity because no official announcement has been made. The Hall of Fame coach has led the Americans since 2005, winning gold at the 2008 and 2012 Olympics, and the 2010 world basketball championship.

LOS ANGELES - The bus rolled into L.A. Live, across the street from the Staples Center, on Monday night and out stepped the La Salle Explorers. Make that the Sweet 16 La Salle Explorers. As the team entered a restaurant for a bite to eat after flying into Los Angeles from Kansas City, there were many hushed, "Who are those guys?" comments. Not even legendary Lionel Simmons was recognized by the patrons. It's a role the team relishes, as somehow the Explorers have managed to get into their Sweet 16 matchup with Wichita State on Thursday night pretty much unnoticed around the country.
