Mike McCoy's interview with San Diego went so well that both sides felt he was a perfect fit to become the Chargers' new coach. "There was no doubt in my mind when I got back on that plane to go back home" Monday night, said McCoy, the former Denver Broncos offensive coordinator who was introduced Tuesday as the Chargers' coach. "They wanted to keep me here last night. But I said, 'I've got to talk to my wife about this. . . . If I made the decision without talking to my wife, I might get in a little trouble.' " So McCoy flew back to Denver to talk it over with his wife, Kellie.

DENVER - The idea in venturing out to the Arctic-chilled Rockies for the Ravens-Broncos game this past weekend was to get a feel for Broncos offensive coordinator Mike McCoy as an Eagles coaching candidate, even though little has been said about McCoy and the Birds since the traveling search party spoke with him a week ago Sunday. The idea could have worked out a lot better than it did. While the Eagles seem likely to hire an NFL assistant from somewhere to succeed Andy Reid, now that every college coach this side of Andy Talley has told them he would rather stay put, McCoy did nothing to further his candidacy in the Broncos' crushing, 38-35, double-overtime loss to the Ravens.

Making another move to reach the 60-man roster by Tuesday's deadline, the Eagles yesterday released veteran fullback Jeff Cothran. Cothran, who spent his first three seasons (1994-96) with the Cincinnati Bengals and was out of football last year, sprained his right ankle July 25 in training-camp drills and had been unable to practice with the team ever since. He is the sixth player the Eagles have released in the last week. On Monday, the team cut kicker Jaret Holmes; quarterback Mike McCoy; fullback A.J. Jelks; and tight end Kevin Hickman, a Cherry Hill native.

A man with a slow hand Fans thrilled to Wilson Valdez getting an impressive win in relief in a 19-inning victory over the Reds on May 25. Over the weekend, it was Blue Jays utility player Mike McCoy moving from second to the mound against the Red Sox in an effort to help his team (which was losing in a blowout) conserve its bullpen. The outcome? A 12-pitch inning in which he sat down Carl Crawford , Marco Scutaro , and J.D. Drew in order and earned a standing ovation.

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. - The Eagles on Thursday joined the Cleveland Browns as teams to interview Bill O'Brien, but that tasty morsel of news was rendered moot when O'Brien told the Harrisburg Patriot-News he was staying at Penn State. A source close to the situation confirmed to the Daily News that the Eagles interviewed O'Brien in Massachusetts, while the Cleveland Plain Dealer reported that the Browns had spoken with him this week, before their scheduled Friday interview in Arizona with Oregon coach Chip Kelly.

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. - Since starting the season 6-0, the Denver Broncos are 2-6. The goodwill coach Josh McDaniels built up in that hot start took a hit Sunday. Fans spent plenty of time Sunday night and yesterday complaining about the stunning, 20-19 loss to Oakland. They wondered why offensive tackle Ryan Clady got more plays called for him than running back Peyton Hillis, Denver's leading rusher last year. They wondered where the deep ball or anyone not named Brandon Marshall has gone in the passing offense.

Jay Haas took advantage of Tom Watson's uncharacteristic bogeys and passive play to steal the final Champions Tour major of the year. Haas charged past Watson to win the Senior Players Championship in Timonium, Md., by a stroke, birdieing the 18th hole yesterday to match the course record with a 6-under 64. "All day, I was right there," Haas said. "I missed some very makable putts on the front nine, and I was very disappointed in that. But I felt like I was going to get some more, the way I was hitting it and the way I felt today.

Seldom before has a loss by a 2-10 team created such good humor. After their 24-16 loss to Green Bay yesterday, the Eagles' locker room wasn't exactly jubilant, but there reigned amid the cubicles a sense of relief - a feeling of finally. The cause? Koy Detmer, a seventh-round throwaway pick in last year's draft who spent the 1997 season on injured reserve. Detmer's ability was so much in question that, to battle him in training camp, the Birds signed Mr. Nobody, Mike McCoy, a former Utah quarterback whom an assistant spotted while working out first-round rookie receiver Kevin Dyson - taken by Tennessee - before the draft.

Top-seeded Mary Jo McWilliams of Llanerch and Alexandra Frazier of Gulph Mills rallied from a 2-down deficit after nine holes to win the 55th annual Jane McCullough Hamilton Invitational golf tournament yesterday at Huntingdon Valley Country Club. McWilliams and Frazier beat Coatesville's Gail Brown and Philadelphia Country Club's Kerry Rutan, 2 up, with the back-nine comeback in the better-ball, match-play format for Class A women. After tying the match on the 16th hole, Frazier 2-putted for par to win the 17th hole and made a match-clinching birdie on the 18th.

BETHLEHEM - Mike McCoy pursued his dream for what must have seemed like forever. It took 36 years, but last year it finally happened for him. So maybe it's really true what they say about life and all those best things. "It was kind of the culmination of a long journey," he said Monday via speaker phone at Saucon Valley Country Club, where starting Sept. 6 he'll try to defend his U.S. Mid-Amateur title. "I've been trying to win a USGA championship since I tried to qualify for the U.S. junior at 14. " Nine months ago in the Country Club of Birmingham (Ala.)

One week after LeSean McCoy rushed 31 times for 184 yards, the Eagles' star running back was limited to 11 carries for 53 yards in a 33-30 loss to the San Diego Chargers. McCoy was still a major contributor, catching five passes for 114 yards. The Chargers appeared to build their defense around trying to stop McCoy. "They stacked the box, but we still ran on the ground," McCoy said. "To be honest, even stacking the box, I didn't think that as a defense they were really effective.

As DeSean Jackson pointed out, the Eagles captured the attention of the "whole world" during Chip Kelly's memorable Eagles debut on Monday night. That might be hyperbole, but there's growing buzz about Kelly and the Eagles after they built a big lead over Washington with their dizzying pace and opportunistic defense. Now the Eagles try for an encore. And they do it in Kelly's first regular-season game at Lincoln Financial Field. The Eagles host the Chargers, who followed the Eagles on Monday by building a three-touchdown lead over Houston before losing it in the fourth quarter.

Eagles cornerback Bradley Fletcher did not practice Wednesday because of a concussion, while cornerback Brandon Hughes returned to practice in his recovery from a broken hand. Fletcher is "day-to-day," defensive coordinator Bill Davis said. He is a starting cornerback, so his absence could force the Eagles to make major adjustments on defense. Recovery from a concussion varies depending on the player and the severity, so it is unknown whether Fletcher will play Sunday against the San Diego Chargers.

WHEN THE buzzer sounded Sunday night in Kansas City, four La Salle media members had a choice to make. They could either watch the Explorers' Sweet 16 game at home, or put in the effort and get themselves to Los Angeles. Effort won out. The group decided to take matters into its own hands after La Salle's 76-74 win in the Round of 32 against Ole Miss. "There was no doubt in my mind that we were going to Los Angeles," La Salle senior Dave Grzybowski said. "We just knew we couldn't do it alone.

DENVER - Two of the Eagles' announced coaching candidates will be in the spotlight this weekend, as the NFL playoffs churn forward. Denver offensive coordinator Mike McCoy, whom the Birds interviewed last week, will be tested by the visiting Ravens on Saturday. Then Seattle defensive coordinator Gus Bradley has a Sunday date against the Falcons in Atlanta, where the Eagles' brass is expected to travel to interview him. Some people have inferred that, because the Eagles didn't meet very long with McCoy, as they did with Bill O'Brien and Chip Kelly, and they didn't let it be known there would be another meeting, as they did with Brian Kelly, McCoy definitely is off the list.

Darnell McDonald threw out Edwin Encarnacion at the plate on a single to short leftfield for the final out and the Boston Red Sox held on for a 3-2 win over the visiting Toronto Blue Jays last night. Jose Bautista had hit a two-run homer with no outs in the ninth off Jonathan Papelbon. Then a single by Encarnacion and a walk to J.P. Arencibia put runners at first and second with two outs. John McDonald looped a single that Darnell McDonald charged and, on the run, fired the ball on the fly to Jason Varitek.
