Now that he's earned his 400th career coaching victory, La Salle men's basketball coach John Giannini doesn't expect things to be a whole lot different. "They're still going to charge me bus fare. If I go out to dinner tonight, they are still going to charge me there," Giannini said Saturday after the Explorers' 78-52 rout of visiting Bucknell. "The 400 doesn't really mean anything to me or any coach. But beating Bucknell to me is a big deal. " It should be. Last year when the teams faced each other, the Bison had their way with the Explorers, dropping them, 89-77, at La Salle.

The chance of injured Lehigh star and preseason all-American CJ McCollum making another big postseason run seems to be getting more remote. Lehigh coach Brett Reed said Monday that McCollum is getting healthier after the guard suffered a broken left foot in early January. McCollum's recovery is in line with the eight to 10 weeks the school estimated at the time of his injury - right around the time the Patriot League tournament begins this week. But Reed has also sounded a cautious tone over the last few months when asked about the high-scoring senior with NBA potential.

By Alice P. Gast There are few experiences more exciting and rewarding for a college or university president than watching your graduates being selected in the National Basketball Association draft. It was truly inspiring to see Lehigh University's C.J. McCollum and Bucknell University's Mike Muscala chosen from among the most accomplished college basketball players in the United States. Both have led their teams to Patriot League conference titles and NCAA tournaments. Both also graduated with their classes this spring, achieving academic success and displaying exemplary leadership on their campuses.

It's all about the analytics these days . . . if you are an NBA team seeking to draft a productive player. And the 76ers are just such a team, except they have zero margin for error. You look at a promising college player and you want to know, let's say, how many points his team scored for every minute he was on the floor. How many points did his team give up for every minute he is on the floor? You are measuring productivity in endless ways. Think of it as the NBA meets Moneyball . Given the hapless state of the Sixers' relationship with Andrew Bynum, the club is likely looking for a big man with its selection at No. 11 in the first round.

CHICAGO - You could almost feel the relief pouring out of C.J. McCollum as he talked at the rookie predraft combine. An unlikely preseason All-America from Lehigh University, McCollum was leading the country in scoring at 25.7 a game when he broke his left foot on Jan. 5. The hope was that the star guard, who had led the Mountain Hawks to an NCAA Tournament win over Duke last year, would be able to return at some point of the season. But the 6-3 McCollum never did get clearance and reluctantly had to become a spectator for the rest of the season.
