The novels of Nicholas Sparks are godsends for Hollywood ingenues, not to mention Hollywood. As many of his books tell stories of young love clinging to the trellis of hope, they make ideal vehicles for actresses transitioning from teenage to adult roles. Sparks' familiar motifs of love blooming across class divisions and despite unforeseen tragedy and family feuds have made him the undisputed Kaiser of Kleenex. In the tradition of Mandy Moore, Rachel McAdams and Amanda Seyfried, Miley Cyrus - the artist formerly known as Hannah Montana - does Sparks in The Last Song, an effective, and relatively restrained, tearjerker for daddies and their daughters.

Does acting like a tramp mean you are a tramp? No, says philosophical ethics prof Miley Cyrus in response to critics who suggest that her "Can't Be Tamed" music vid is far too sexually suggestive for a 17-year-old child. "I'm not trying to be 'slutty,' " Miley says. "I'm not trying to be like, go to the club and get a bunch of guys. . . . What I'm trying to do is to make a point with my record and look consistent, in the way my record sounds and the way I dress. " So, is she just acting inarticulate?

LET'S HAVE a hearty Tattle round of applause for Miley Cyrus , who has been voted the worst celebrity influence of 2010. Amazingly, the dis-honor wasn't voted by angry parents whose tween daughters wanted stripper poles for Christmas, but by the followers of AOL's JSYK.com (Just So You Know) - a website targeting 9- to 15-year-olds. Miley, 18, who successfully defended her crown from 2009, tallied 58 percent of the 99,000 votes. An online storm broke out this week over Urban Outfitters Inc., and it intensified Thursday night when teen celebrity Miley Cyrus hopped onto Twitter to share a few thoughts of her own. The TV/movie/music star's comments, which implicitly attacked the company for its founder's support of Republican causes, began not with the firepower of a high-paid marketing machine. Rather, they capped a frenzy that started with a single shout-out from a jewelry designer in Chicago with a Twitter account.

"IM NOT TRYING to be 'slutty,' " Miley Cyrus said in a recent interview. So? Kareem Abdul-Jabbar isn't trying to be tall. Doesn't make him short. "I'm not trying to be like, go to the club and get a bunch of guys," Miley added. "What I'm trying to do is to make a point with my record and look consistent, in the way my record sounds and the way I dress. " And that would be . . . ? Not slutty? For many who still want to think of Miley as "Hannah Montana," her "sexy" new look and her provocative video for her new single "Can't Be Tamed," are jarring, controversial and skin-baring.

Hannah Montana and Miley Cyrus, one and sort of the same, appeared at the Wachovia Center on Monday night before an audience of several thousand healthy-lunged girls. Hannah, the basis of the hit show on the Disney Channel, is a rock star by night. She's the one in the blond wig. Miley, her daytime persona, is the normal teenage girl - though you wouldn't know it from her Cher Jr. hard-rock ensemble and auburn hair extensions. Cece: Being there and seeing her in that atmosphere, everything about it, and all the special effects made up for the fact that her singing isn't really great.

Miley Cyrus has just left the dentist's office. The verdict: The 13-year-old needs braces. A very Hollywood compromise is reached: Attaching the buttresses to the inside of her teeth. The March debut drew 5.4 million viewers, the most ever for an original series on the channel. Last month, it was the third-highest rated show on television among tween girls (9-14 year olds)
