In San Francisco, U.S. District Court Judge Susan Illston refused late Friday to overturn Barry Bonds' obstruction of justice conviction, denying the slugger's motion for a new trial or acquittal on the charge. In April, jurors failed to reach a verdict on three other counts charging the seven-time NL MVP with making false statements to a grand jury in 2003   . Bonds is likely to appeal Illston's decision, which could delay any retrial until 2013.       Fateful day Today marks the one-year anniversary of the Washington Nationals' announcement that pitching phenom and Touch 'Em All (formerly High&Inside)

In a grave insult to all oversexed, smoking-jacket-wearing octogenarians, professional blond Crystal Harris , 25, will not return the $90,000 engagement ring Hugh Hefner gave her, even though she abandoned the 85-year-old pubescent boy days before their scheduled June wedding. Worse, Crystal has put it up for auction. Hugh, a role model to us all, is totally copacetic. "I got the dog, she got the ring," he says. "I got the best of it. BEAUTY AND THE Baseball Player have called it quits. New York Yankee (booo!) Derek Jeter , 37, and actress Minka Kelly , 31, (best known for playing cheerleader Lyla Garrity on the dearly departed TV show "Friday Night Lights") have broken off their three-year relationship, according to JustJared. "They care about each other and it was amicable," a source told JustJared. "They're still friends. They still really care for each other. " Reps for the stars wouldn't officially confirmed the split, but they are known for keeping their relationship private.

* PRIME SUSPECT. 10 tonight, NBC10.   AMERICA NEEDS another cop show about as much as it needs another remake of a British classic. So it's just as well that NBC's "Prime Suspect," premiering tonight, appears to be only loosely based on the series in which Helen Mirren starred as Scotland Yard Detective Chief Inspector Jane Tennison. And that it doesn't yet feel like just another cop show. "Prime Suspect" fans would be better off starting fresh with Maria Bello's New York Police Detective Jane Timoney (named, yes, for ex- Philly Police Commissioner John Timoney, who went through the NYPD academy with the show's technical adviser)

Jeter a cheater? He did gain some experience playing a bit part in the hit movie The Other Guys. And maybe he took some lessons from his girlfriend, Friday Night Lights actress Minka Kelly. On Wednesday night Derek Jeter did a good job of acting as if a pitch by Tampa Bay's Chad Qualls hit him when in fact the ball hit the knob of the Yankee captain's bat, as was evident in replays. As reported by Newsday, Jeter copped to it immediately. After the game. "The bat," Jeter said with a smile, asked what the ball hit in the seventh inning.

Former New York Yankees pitcher Hideki Irabu was found dead, apparently of a suicide, on Wednesday evening in the Los Angeles suburb of Rancho Palos Verdes, authorities said Thursday. Other details were not immediately released. The righthander starred in Japan for nearly a decade before the San Diego Padres purchased his contract from the Chiba Lotte Marines in 1997. But Irabu declined to join the Padres, insisting he would only play for the Yanks. Signed a few months later to a four-year, $12.8 million contract, he made a memorable debut at Yankee Stadium against the Tigers on July 10, 1997, fanning nine in 62/3 innings for the win and a standing ovation.

DEREK JETER is about to go where no other pin-striped, single-digit Yankee has ever gone before. Not Babe Ruth, not Lou Gehrig, not Joe DiMaggio. Jeter is about to become the first New York Yankee to grind out 3,000 hits. He plays hard, he plays hurt, he's handsome, he's humble. He has won five Gold Gloves, despite the furious screeches of those nerds with their charts and graphs and decimal points who insist the shortstop has the range of a weary snail. He played for baseball's most intrusive owner, George Steinbrenner.

Derek Jeter broke the New York Yankees' hit record held by Lou Gehrig for more than 7 decades last night. He did it with a single to rightfield in the third inning. That gave Jeter 2,722 hits, one more than Gehrig, whose Hall of Fame career was cut short by illness in 1939. On a rainy night at Yankee Stadium, the game became official when the Orioles were retired in the fifth, putting Jeter's feat in the record book. The start was delayed 87 minutes by heavy rain that had tapered off by the third inning.
