Turnovers proved costly as the La Salle women's basketball team fell, 56-43, last night at Wichita State. The Explorers committed 27 turnovers in the loss. Morgan Robertson led La Salle (1-4) with 11 points, and Tara Lapetina scored nine. The Explorers next play at 1 p.m. Sunday when they host Lehigh at Tom Gola Arena.

Morgan Robertson was scoreless in La Salle's win at Villanova on Friday, but she had 14 points and 11 rebounds to lead the Explorers (2-0) to a 71-57 victory over Long Island yesterday at Tom Gola Arena. Margaret Elderton (16 points), Jamie Walsh (11) and Ashley Gale (11) each nailed three three-pointers for La Salle. In other area games: At Saint Joseph's, Brittany Ford scored 19 points, Ashley Logue and Mary Kate McDade 14 each as the Hawks (1-1) topped Lehigh, 71-63.

Temple sophomore forward Kristen McCarthy has been selected All-Atlantic 10 in a vote by the conference's 14 head coaches. McCarthy is joined on the first team by Xavier junior Amber Harris, the player of the year; Xavier's Ta'Shia Phillips, who also was named defensive player of the year; Richmond's Brittani Shells; and St. Bonaventure's Dana Mitchell. La Salle senior forward Morgan Robertson was named student-athlete of the year in voting among the league's sports information directors.

Brittany Ford scored 15 points to lead the visiting Saint Joseph's women's team to a 45-39 victory over La Salle last night. Morgan Robertson had 19 points and 11 rebounds for the Explorers (5-16, 0-6 Atlantic 10), who suffered their seventh straight loss and fell to 1-2 in City Series play. Ashley Prim added 8 points, 7 rebounds and 5 assists for the Hawks (10-10, 3-2), who finished the City Series at 2-2, despite trailing by eight late in the first half. In another game: At Saint Louis, Kristen McCarthy scored 22 points as Temple defeated the Billikens, 63-48, in an Atlantic 10 game.

Maya Moore had a season-high 38 points and a career-high 20 rebounds to help top-ranked Connecticut beat Syracuse 87-66 last night in Syracuse, N.Y. for its 67th straight victory. Tiffany Hayes added 22 points for the Huskies (28-0, 14-0 Big East), who have beaten Syracuse (19-8, 6-8) 18 straight times and are within three of tying their own NCAA record for consecutive wins at 70. UConn also is within two games of its sixth undefeated regular season. Tina Charles, the Huskies' leading scorer, had a season-low three points, getting her only basket of the game with 13 minutes, 30 seconds left.

Ahead by 17 points at halftime, La Salle seemed to be in a perfect position yesterday afternoon to capture the title of the Hawk Holiday Classic in West Long Branch, N.J. It was not to be: Monmouth outscored the Explorers (4-9) by 39-14 in the second half to post a 57-49 victory. The Hawks (5-6) had runs of 18-4 and 11-3 as they blew past La Salle. Morgan Robertson led La Salle with 17 points and 10 rebounds; Gabby Singer had 17 points for the Hawks. Delaware 57, Massachusetts 55 - Freshman star Elena Delle Donne hit a layup with five seconds left to propel the Blue Hens past the Minutewomen in Newark, Del. The win was the sixth in a row for Delaware (8-3)

La Salle drew a record home crowd for a single women's basketball game at Tom Gola Arena yesterday, but the rest of the afternoon belonged to Princeton, which claimed a 68-49 victory. The crowd of 1,762 was dominated by area children as part of a special promotion with a noon start. "The crowd was great," La Salle coach Tom Lochner said. "Our marketing department did a great job. La Salle's previous biggest crowd was 1,476 on Feb. 1, 1998, the Explorers' first home game after the completed renovation of the arena complex formerly called Hayman Hall.

La Salle struggled with an anemic 32.7 percent shooting percentage yesterday and fell to Binghamton, 53-47, at the Tom Gola Arena. The Explorers (3-4) almost overcame that inefficiency near the end. Trailing by 49-40 with 3 minutes, 35 seconds left, La Salle moved to within a basket on Morgan Robertson's layup at 49-47 with 1:39 to go, but went scoreless the rest of the way. Andrea Jones' layup with 26 seconds gave Binghamton (4-4) some insurance, and the Bearcats added two more points on Erica Carter's foul shots with three seconds left.

The bus carrying the Temple women's basketball team yesterday had little difficulty navigating the snow up Broad Street to La Salle. Once inside Tom Gola Arena, the Owls plowed through the Explorers for a 55-34 win that gave them a 3-1 Big Five record and a second-place finish to Villanova in the City Series. Kristen McCarthy scored 15 points and LaKeisha Eaddy added 11 for Temple (16-6, 5-2 Atlantic Ten Conference). No one scored in double figures for the Explorers (5-17, 0-7)
