TO SAY that high school has changed since my day is like saying dinosaurs no longer roam the earth, but high-school TV shows? They're still nearly always about the beautiful but inexplicably not-popular girl who catches the eye of the popular cute guy. Yes, even "Faking It," MTV's rom-com about two 15-year-old girls (Katie Stevens and Rita Volk) pretending to be lesbians. Like its lead-in, "Awkward," in which Jenna (Ashley Rickards) was plucked from adolescent obscurity after she was mistakenly thought to have tried to kill herself, "Faking It" suggests that high-school students are so cool with things that once would (and still do)

AS THE youth of America goes, so goes MTV. With its latest reality show, the network focuses on the growing importance of food culture to its target audience. And wouldn't you know it? The network's first food show, "House of Food," comes from three Philly brothers. Think of "House of Food," premiering Monday at 10 p.m., as if someone took "Top Chef" and MTV's signature show, "The Real World," and put them into a blender: Seven attractive amateur chefs, none of whom have gone to culinary school, are picked to live in a gorgeous Los Angeles mansion.

TIME IS MOVING so quickly these days, we're getting to the point where we're trying to experience things before they happen - the most obvious example being athletes who celebrate victories before they actually . . . win. But there are also trailers that give away the whole movie so you don't need to see it and news stories that predict the future. In this item we'll discuss the notion of a "surprise" appearance. A surprise used to be something you weren't expecting - that scream at a 50th-anniversary party where you prayed the aged honorees wouldn't die of shock right on the spot.

AFTER ALL the police reports from shows like "Jersey Shore," "Buckwild" and "Teen Mom," MTV is putting a few more dollars into scripted television. The network that once played music - hard to believe, kids - is prepping a pilot for a summer 2014 series based on the movie "Scream. " The network says the series would reinvent the horror-comedy franchise that began with the original release in 1996 and spawned three sequels. The films' original director, Wes Craven , is in discussions to direct the one-hour pilot.

FOLLOWING the death of reality-TV star Shain Gandee , MTV has officially canceled "Buckwild. " "After careful consideration, MTV will not be moving forward with season two of 'Buckwild' in West Virginia," MTV said, in a statement. "We love the cast and the show and this was not an easy decision, but given Shain's tragic passing and essential presence on the show, we felt it was not appropriate to continue without him. Instead, we are working on a meaningful way to pay tribute to his memory on our air and privately.

As hundreds of tearful friends and fans filed past two closed coffins Sunday in Charleston, W. Va., a slideshow of family photos showed the simple country life that Buckwild reality TV star Shain Gandee lived long before the cameras started rolling. Set to country music were snapshots of the 21-year-old before his 15 minutes of TV fame: as a uniformed pee wee football player, in a tuxedo for prom, kissing a bride. In some, he wore hunting camouflage, holding a slain buck by its antlers and displaying a batch of gray squirrels.

Bam Margera's kitchen, in his words, "just got Jackson Pollock-ed. " Neon paint drips from nearly every surface - refrigerator, cabinets, counters. The Jackass star was newly back from an international tour with his band, FFU - whose full name is unprintable, he says with a grin - and simply let loose. "I usually paint when I'm on tour, but I was on this really nice tour bus with a really nice driver," he said. "When I paint, the whole place just gets Jackson Pollock-ed. " Margera, 33, has been painting for only about three years, but his mother says he's always had an artistic streak.

DURING THE 2012 presidential election, Ted Nugent said that if President Obama were re-elected, the longtime gun-control opponent would either be "dead or in jail. " He left out a third option: At the Capitol. U.S. Rep. Steve Stockman , R-Texas, showing as much good sense as we expect from congressmen these days, has invited the Nuge to be his guest at the president's State of the Union address. Nugent has referred to the Obama administration as "evil" and "America-hating," and has compared it to coyotes who needed to be shot.

* EMILY OWENS, M.D. 9 p.m. Tuesday, CW 57. * UNDEREMPLOYED. 10 p.m. Tuesday, MTV. IT'S BEEN a tough fall for TV's women doctors. On ABC's "Grey's Anatomy," Seattle Grace has lost one, and another's now legless. On Fox, "The Mob Doctor" (Jordana Spiro) spends her spare time removing screwdrivers and other foreign objects from felons, thanks to a deal made with the neighborhood devil. And Mindy Kalin's ob-gyn on "The Mindy Project" struggles to find a man. They're both also fighting for viewers, though they have more than Dr. Zoe Hart (Rachel Bilson)
