When the U.S. national soccer program asks you to join them for a workout, there often isn't much time to think. Not that there's much to think about. It's an invitation most soccer players dream of and one they wouldn't dream of passing up. "It still feels a little bit surreal," said Amirah Ali, standing on the balcony of her dorm room and peering out on the mountain peaks that surround the U.S. Olympic Training Center in San Diego. "It came out of nowhere. I didn't expect to be here at all. " Last Thursday, it was announced that Ali, the superstar forward of the Eastern girls' soccer team, was one of just 26 girls from around the country called up to the U.S. under-18 women's national team for a one-week training camp this week at the scenic, sprawling Olympic Training Center.

In his first Haverford High School swim meet, Shane Ryan dove in for the 50-yard freestyle, and Haverford coach Matt Stewart just knew. Ryan was something special. "He beat a senior from another team," Stewart said, "and I was like,'Whoa, we might have something here beyond just a pretty good swimmer.' He just took off from there. " Ryan's rise has been unconventional. After high school, the 22-year-old Havertown native swam at Penn State for three years. Ryan, a dual Irish-American citizen, then moved to Ireland to train with its national team.

The U.S. men's national team has shown plenty of skill in the Copa America Centenario, but the team's mental toughness may have put it over the top and into the quarterfinals. It was especially evident Saturday in a 1-0 win over Paraguay before a boisterous crowd of 51,041 at Lincoln Financial Field, but it first began after the opening 2-0 loss to Colombia. At the time, there was real concern about whether the Americans could advance out of Group A. Just two games later, they ended up winning it. Sure, it helped that a Costa Rica team that the United States routed in its second game, 4-0, somehow managed to beat Colombia, 3-2, later Saturday evening in Houston.

In Zina Robbins-Maldonado's University City bedroom there are three shelves above a sofa next to her bed. The shelves are full of pictures of the senior with her teammates, trophies, sportsmanship awards for being an "amateur basketball player," and "field hockey stuff," as the Friends Select three-sport athlete put it. And then there are the softballs. It started as a way for Falcons coach Bill Klose to draw attention to the accomplishments of former player Grace Finkbiner, who graduated in 2012, setting several school records along the way. The tradition grew from there as the team became more successful.

Within the 5-foot-8, 165-pound body of Michael Sowers is a heart that refuses to quit and a spleen that nearly derailed his football and lacrosse dreams. Last week, the senior attacker for Upper Dublin, who is believed to be the all-time assist leader in U.S. boys' high school lacrosse history, was named to the U.S. men's under-19 national lacrosse team. To understand the significance of the accomplishment, however, you need to consider his bout with mononucleosis during football season.
