THE INDIANS called upon a proven recruiter to land free-agent outfielder Nick Swisher. Former Ohio State football coach Jim Tressel was among a group who had lunch Tuesday at Progressive Field with Swisher, who is considering a multiyear contract offer from the Indians. Swisher would fill a hole in rightfield for Cleveland, which traded Shin-Soo Choo to Cincinnati last week and has been trying to improve a team that collapsed in August and finished 68-94. Swisher, 32, played his college ball at Ohio State.

The Cleveland Indians' pitch to bring Nick Swisher "home" worked. Two people familiar with the negotiations said Swisher has agreed to a $56 million, four-year contract with the Indians, who used the free agent outfielder's deep Ohio connections to persuade him to join the club. The people spoke on condition of anonymity Sunday because Swisher must take a physical before the deal can be finalized. The Indians are expected to announce Swisher's signing after Christmas, one of the people said.

Things are getting chippy in the Buckeye State during the Cincinnati-Cleveland interleague series. Even the broadcasters are getting into it. Tom Hamilton, the longtime "Voice of the Indians" was incensed after Reds reliever Aroldis Chapman buzzed a couple of high-and-inside fastballs past Tribe slugger Nick Swisher in the ninth inning of Cincinnati's 4-2 win Monday. After the second pitch, Hamilton sounded as if he was ready to come out of the booth to brawl. "What you'd love to see Swisher do here is knock it right off the temple of Chapman and see how much fun it is to have a ball coming at your head," Hamilton said.

NEW YORK - R.A. Dickey and the Blue Jays agreed to a new contract Monday, clearing the way for the New York Mets to trade the NL Cy Young winner to a Toronto team that's spending a lot of money trying to join baseball's elite. A person familiar with the deal told the Associated Press the trade could be completed once the 38-year-old knuckleballer passes a physical. Randy Johnson wasn't dominating, just good enough to hang around and finally beat the Tampa Bay Devil Rays. Johnson became the third pitcher in major league history with 4,400 strikeouts and Johnny Damon hit a grand slam last night, leading the visiting New York Yankees to a 10-5 victory over the Devil Rays. "I expect to pitch extremely well every time out. Everybody expects me to pitch well, and I'm fine with that. I'm not going to," Johnson said. "When my team picks me up like they have the last couple of games, I'm very grateful, as any pitcher would be. " With owner George Steinbrenner watching part of the game from his suite at Tropicana Field, the Yankees rallied three times to help Johnson end a three-game losing streak against the Devil Rays.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Many questioned his judgment, Terry Francona said. After one year off following a successful eight-year run as manager in Boston that included two World Series titles, Francona took over as manager of the Cleveland Indians this season. The job appeared almost as bleak as when he earned his first managerial position with the Phillies in 1997. "A lot of people were saying, 'What are you doing?' " Francona said Tuesday before his Indians won a crucial 5-3 game against the host Kansas City Royals in a playoff-like atmosphere for two teams contending for a wild-card berth.

Landon Powell hadn't hit righthanded in more than a month. It had been much longer than that since Oakland's backup catcher hit a home run. Both streaks ended emphatically yesterday, and suddenly the Athletics are one of the hottest teams in the American League. Powell hit a tiebreaking home run in the eighth inning, his first homer since September, and the A's held on to beat visiting San Francisco, 2-1, completing a three-game sweep of the defending World Series champs. "Sometimes your pitching has to do it, sometimes your hitting has to do it," Powell said after Oakland extended its winning streak to five games.
