There have been moments, sometimes lasting years, when Britney Spears has seemed like an accessory to her own career - the public face of a vast army of producers, songwriters, choreographers, stylists, publicity agents, and marketing executives. But holding together that tangle of competing agendas is no easy task. Part of what great pop stars do is provide a sense of continuity, using the force of their personality to bridge the gaps between trends. It cannot be an easy job, and six weeks into her Femme Fatale tour, even Britney Spears looked as though she was tired of being Britney Spears.

I'M SURPRISED that everyone is speaking about Miley Cyrus' performance and is embarrassed by her behavior. Are you familiar with Robin Thicke's song "Blurred Lines" - an edited version because the original version was too risqué to air? Haven't we seen Nicki Minaj perform lap dances on stage? Haven't we seen Ciara twerk on stage? Haven't we seen Lil Wayne performing wearing his underwear on stage? Didn't we recently view Rihanna performing to the song "Cake," slapping her private parts?

"I am the last thing on this planet as far as being a racist," Steven Tyler said on Canadian TV in a quasi-apology to Nicki Minaj , we hope the last salvo in one of the sadder media smackdowns in recent memory. It began when Tyler, an American Idol alum, attacked the show's new judges as ignorant. "You just have to give your opinion. It wasn't hard for me," Tyler told MTV. "If it was Bob Dylan [competing], Nicki Minaj would have had him sent to the cornfield!" He added, "Whereas, if it was Bob Dylan with us, we would have brought the best of him out. " This put Minaj out of sorts.

As the aroma of funnel cakes and firecrackers wafted across the Benjamin Franklin Parkway on Friday night, Victoria Whartenby, 14, made a sacrifice for her favorite singer. The petite girl from Clayton would never catch a glimpse of Ed Sheeran with taller fans towering over her. So she got a better view - from the back of a garbage truck. "Anything for Ed," she said with a smile, unfazed by the smell, as she scanned over the crowd of concertgoers. Hundreds of thousands of people throughout the day packed Philadelphia, from the green yard behind Independence Hall to the steps of the Art Museum, to celebrate the city's annual Fourth of July celebration, billed as America's biggest free concert and party, and capped by a spectacular display of fireworks.

PAT SAJAK may not think the Earth is getting warmer, but one thing is for sure: Sajak himself is steaming. The usually mild-mannered "Wheel of Fortune" host took to Twitter to claim, "Global warming alarmists are unpatriotic racists. " Huh? While a reasoned argument might be that civilization is too dependent on fossil fuels to put that genie back in the bottle so we're just going to have to live (or possibly not live) with the consequences, the notion that being overly concerned with the future of the planet (right or wrong)

THE "bombs bursting in air" over the Parkway during the July 4th concert were F-bombs. Mayor Nutter's response was a misfire. Given what's hit this town lately - guns in public schools, kids killed in fires, homes collapsing, the endless school-budget crisis - some foul comments won't kill us, but it paints a picture of a vulgarity-tolerant culture. Criticizing cursing in public venues will cost me my cool edge with the hip kids, I know. (I also know "cool" isn't cool and "hip" isn't hip - but that's how I roll.)

LOS ANGELES - Adele won six Grammys, including song of the year, record of the year and album of the year, and Foo Fighters captured five at a Grammy ceremony that had the difficult task of celebrating music's best while mourning the loss of one of their greatest. Whitney Houston's death on the eve of the awards forced a delicate balance between the exuberance of the show's winners and performances with the loss. Adele, who owned the year's best-selling album with "21," was triumphant in her first performance since vocal-cord surgery forced the cancellation of a tour and months of vocal rest.

REIGNING RAP diva Nicki Minaj channeled Janet Jackson on "Good Morning America" yesterday when she experienced a full-on nipple slip. Wearing a low-cut olive tank, a cropped cotton-candy-pink jacket and sporting a blond curly mane, Minaj was performing her new single "Moment 4 Life" when her boob simply couldn't contain its excitement and popped out of her top. This is Minaj's first public nip slip, but she kept it together and quickly adjusted...

Anyone can take the road to fame and fortune. Anyone. Just ask Muhammad Shahid Nazir , a Pakistani-born fishmonger who became an overnight sensation while hawking frozen snapper and mackerel for one British pound ($1.61) at a London market. Following in the well-trodden footsteps of that adorable Canadian teen Justin Bieber , Nazir, 31, found a massive audience after a video showing him singing a catchy tune was posted on YouTube. Unlike Justin, Nazir performed not a love song, but a tune about selling fish.

Beyonce Knowles stole the show before it even started. The soon-to-be-30 superstar arrived at Sunday night's MTV Video Music Awards holding her bulging belly while dressed in a loose-fitting, flowing red gown. MTV tweeted the news, and photos confirming her motherly status soon circulated. Suddenly Lady Gaga's much-hyped opening number, during which she performed as a greasy, leather-jacketed male alter ego, became less important. Britney Spears was the night's first award winner; others included Nicki Minaj and Katy Perry , who won a trophy with Kanye West for her video "E.T.
