The starless Denver Nuggets have lost their biggest name on the bench. George Karl was ousted Thursday less than a month after winning the NBA's coach of the year award. His tenure with the Nuggets is over after 81/2 seasons. The longtime coach is following general manager Masai Ujiri out the door in Denver after Ujiri, the league's executive of the year, recently left to become GM of the Toronto Raptors. - Associated Press

To Antonio McDyess, the game meant nothing. He performed as if it meant everything. McDyess had 25 points, 10 rebounds, six blocks and four steals as the Nuggets, playing for the first time since the school shooting in suburban Denver, beat Golden State, 96-84, last night. The Nuggets postponed Tuesday's game against Portland because of the tragedy that resulted in 15 deaths. Denver players wore black patches on their jerseys to honor the victims. "I thought about it all week," McDyess said.

Gentlemen, start your engines. The Denver Nuggets bring their revved-up offense to the Spectrum tonight to take on the Sixers. Actually, the term "revved-up" is mild when describing the Nuggets. Denver makes The Flash look like a slowpoke. So far, the Nuggets' fastbreak has scored a lot of points, but that hasn't translated into a lot of wins. Denver, it seems, can run but it can't hide from the fact that other teams manage to keep up. The Nuggets are 3-14 overall and 0-8 on the road.

The Denver Nuggets spanned the age spectrum in the backcourt yesterday, signing rookie Mark Macon and reaching agreement with 37-year-old Walter Davis. Former Temple star Macon, the eighth choice in the NBA draft, signed a reported five-year deal worth about $7.5 million hours before the Nuggets were to play at Golden State in the season opener. The deal is believed to include payments both to the Mark Macon Foundation, which will benefit needy people both in Denver and his home state of Michigan, and the Mark Macon Endowment Fund, which will provide financial assistance for needy students at Temple.

The Denver Nuggets took care of their top offseason priority, agreeing to terms with center Marcus Camby on a multiyear contract. The deal will be signed July 14 after the NBA's moratorium on free-agent signings is lifted, Camby's agent, Rick Kaplan, said. Terms weren't disclosed. "Marcus thinks the franchise is headed in the right direction," Kap-lan said yesterday. "From the time he first arrived in Denver to where the franchise is now, it has improved exponentially, and he thinks it's only going to get better.

The Denver Nuggets are considering offering a tryout this week to former NBA rebounding champion Dennis Rodman. "We might bring him in for a day for a tryout," general manager Kiki Vandeweghe told the Denver Post for a story yesterday. "We're just looking around. We've kind of kicked the idea around a little bit. " Rodman, 42, hasn't played in the NBA since the 1999-2000 season with the Dallas Mavericks. But the Nuggets are looking for another veteran big man, and the 6-8 Rodman has played on five championship teams.

If this were a presidential election, the TV networks long ago would have declared the Washington Bullets the winner in the June 1991 trade that brought them veteran guard Michael Adams from Denver for the No. 8 pick the Nuggets used to select Temple guard Mark Macon. Denver coach Dan Issel acknowledged that Macon has not fared well in a few key precincts, but pointed out that the polls have not closed. "We have not given up on Mark. Far from it," Issel said before the Nuggets fell, 88-80, to the Sixers last night at the Spectrum.

Hispanic activists in the Denver area dropped a boycott of the Nuggets and team officials said yesterday they will make coach Dan Issel apologize publicly to Latinos for an insulting ethnic remark. The announcement was made after a group of about 25 Hispanic activists met with top officials of Kroenke Sports Enterprises, which owns the Nuggets and the NHL's Colorado Avalanche. Several Hispanic leaders said Issel made a heartfelt apology to the group at the start of the meeting and that it was widely accepted.

The Denver Nuggets had two reasons to celebrate, as they beat visiting Dallas to tighten the playoff race and welcomed back Nene from cancer treatment. Carmelo Anthony scored 32 points and sparked the decisive run in the third quarter of the Nuggets' 118-105 win over the Mavericks last night. Allen Iverson added 31 points for the Nuggets, who won their fourth straight and temporarily moved into a tie with Golden State for the eighth and final playoff spot. The Warriors beat Portland later last night.

Steve Gunn is a sandy-haired mop top with raccoon eyes who can play the guitar just like ringing a bell. Perched somewhere between Television's Richard Lloyd and Jerry Garcia, Gunn is adept in the dark arts of arpeggio, clustered overtone and the kind of modal chording arabesques that make Western stoners feel like Sufi mystics for the space of an album side. Straight out of Drexel Hill, Gunn established a beachhead in Brooklyn more than a decade ago, where he's been releasing pleasantly complicated albums of effortless art rock since at least 2007.

DENVER - One by one the 76ers players, coaches and staff members on hand for a voluntary workout embraced JaKarr Sampson outside the Denver Nuggets locker room Tuesday at the Pepsi Center. "Good job, big man," Ish Smith said to Sampson, the Nuggets' starting small forward. "Keep doing your thing, except tomorrow. " "What's up, Jee-REE?" trainer Kevin Johnson playfully said to Sampson. For a moment it was like old times for the 6-foot-9, 214-pounder, who a little over a month ago was the most beloved Sixer.

Emmanuel Mudiay added 22 points and the Nuggets used a 10-0 run midway through the final quarter to gain some separation. Bryant finished with five points and didn't play in the second half because of a sore right shoulder.

This one had to hurt. Up by five points with 3 minutes, 24 seconds left against the road-weary and struggling Denver Nuggets, the 76ers appeared on their way a second victory in three games. Denver, however, went on a 12-1 run en route to taking a 108-105 victory Saturday afternoon at the Wells Fargo Center. The loss dropped the Sixers to 1-20. They have blown six fourth-quarter leads in their last seven losses. "This one definitely hurts like most of them do," Nerlens Noel said.

DENVER - The pregame talk centered on the supposedly inspired Denver Nuggets. 76ers coach Brett Brown even said they were playing with a little more purpose since the teams last met on Feb. 2. "They have talent," Brown said. "You look at their roster, and they're talented. . . . They have enough talent and depth to win in this league. On first glance, that's what I see. " But what 14,068 fans at the Pepsi Center witnessed was the Sixers snapping their 16-game road losing streak.

DENVER - In his 60 games as a 76er, Robert Covington has started 40 of them. Sometimes it appears he prefers being the starter, as was the case Tuesday night when he scored a team-high 21 points and made 5-of-6 three pointers in a loss at Sacramento. Last night in Denver, with Jason Richardson back in the starting lineup, Covington went back to the bench. His play didn't lessen a bit, however, as he poured in 25 points to lead the Sixers (18-54) to a 99-85 in over the Denver Nuggets to close out their three game, west coast swing with their lone win and in doing so snapped a 16-game road losing streak.

What has gotten into these 76ers? Months ago, they were the laughing-stock of the NBA. No one is laughing anymore - especially not the Denver Nuggets. Hollis Thompson had a career night as the Sixers held on Tuesday to defeat the Nuggets, 105-98, at the Wells Fargo Center. The win came after the Sixers gave two of the league's elite teams - the Atlanta Hawks and the Cleveland Cavaliers - all they could handle before being held off. The Sixers (11-39) have won three of their last five and have a 7-11 record since Jan. 5. That's impressive, considering that they opened the season with 17 consecutive losses.

DENVER - The search for consecutive wins is finally over. The 76ers leaned on a second-quarter explosion for a 114-102 win over Denver on Wednesday night at the Pepsi Center. The win came on the heels of a road victory over the Los Angeles Lakers on Sunday night, giving the Sixers back-to-back triumphs. That might not sound all that important, but for the Sixers (10-21), it was a huge milestone. They were 0-5 in games after a victory and had gone 26 games without winning back-to-back contests since opening the season with three straight wins.

This time, the 76ers were unable to take advantage of a shorthanded team. The Denver Nuggets, minus two starters, prevailed, 103-92, in front of 13,113 Saturday night at the Wells Fargo Center. The victory improved the Nuggets to 12-8 and snapped their two-game skid. The Sixers dropped to 7-14. The setback was their 12th in 15 games. Before Saturday, they had a knack for beating undermanned squads. And there was a thought that Denver might join the Miami Heat (Dwyane Wade sidelined)
