Cherry Hill East freshman Ian Sheeky scored five goals Friday, and the Cougars held on for a 9-8 nonleague win against visiting Ocean City for their first victory of the boys' lacrosse season. Brandon Stern added three goals for Cherry Hill East, which had lost its first eight games of the season. Dan Spatol led Ocean City with four goals. Baseball Ben Acero's two-run double for Camden Catholic proved to be too much for host Paul VI, and the Irish picked up a 12-9 win. Acero finished 3 for 4 with two doubles and three RBIs.

The 49-foot Cape Hatteras, a marine rescue boat that went missing Tuesday morning with one crewman aboard, was found Thursday night submerged near the Great Egg Harbor marker channel off Ocean City. The Coast Guard called off the search Wednesday night for boat captain David McAuliffe, 34, of Egg Harbor Township. But his family and colleagues from Sea Tow, a firm that aids distressed boaters in nonemergency situations, continued looking. A diver indentified the boat, which was discovered using sonar detection, in about 20 feet of water, upside down and partially buried beneath the sand in the heavily traveled channel, the Coast Guard said.

For her 100th career hit, Millville leftfielder Casey Derella didn't have to beat out any throws, slide into any bases, or worry about any fielders. It was, naturally, a home run, and it capped a brilliant day for Derella and the Thunderbolts, 10-0 victors over host Absegami in a Cape-Atlantic League American Division softball game Thursday. Derella went 3 for 4, driving in four runs and homering in the fifth inning to end the game on the 10-run rule. In other Cape-Atlantic games: Ocean City sophomore centerfielder Arianna Segich slugged a walk-off home run, leading the Red Raiders to a 4-3 comeback win over visiting Middle Township.

Clearview's Holly Tevis delivered when her team needed her the most Saturday in a 12-11 overtime win against visiting Rumson in nonleague lacrosse. With 47 seconds left before the teams would begin a sudden-death overtime, Tevis drove hard to the goal and drew a foul, resulting in an 8-meter opportunity, which she blasted to the back of the net. "She probably has one of the hardest and most accurate shots I've seen," Clearview coach Megan Conklin said. "If I wanted anyone to have the ball in that situation, it was Holly.

Louis Roselli was plugging in his GPS in the parking lot of the Absecon Home Depot when his wife started screaming. He turned to see a car veer off Route 30 and into a retention pond on the side of the road. The plume of water the car sent up when it hit the pond was "higher than a telephone pole," he said. Roselli, 58, started his car and raced toward the pond. Four wheels pointed toward the sky. A young man surfaced, gasping, and yelled that three others were trapped in the car. "My heart just sank, like, 'No, don't do this to me,' " Roselli said.
