Already riding a big winning streak, the Penguins' quest for the franchise's fourth Stanley Cup received a rocket-fueled boost late Wednesday night when general manager Ray Shero acquired six-time all-star forward Jarome Iginla from Calgary. All it took was the rights to a couple of prospects and a 2013 first-round draft pick, a pittance for a future Hall of Famer still searching for his first championship after 16 seasons in western Canada. Iginla did not suit up for Wednesday night's game against Colorado - snapping a streak of 441 consecutive games played - and waited for the phone to ring.

The end of the Buffalo Sabres' winning streak didn't seem to cool them off at all. Buffalo rallied from a three-goal, third-period deficit and beat host Boston, 5-4, in a shootout last night, with Ales Kotalik scored the tying goal with 95 seconds left in regulation and then converting the last shot in the shootout. "I still can't believe it happened. I guess that's what we're capable of," said goalie Ryan Miller, who stopped 30 shots and then two out of three in the shootout.

THE PITTSBURGH Penguins have no plans to make a splashy trade before today's deadline, figuring the possible return of Sidney Crosby before the playoffs far outweighs anything they could get in a cluttered market. And considering the way they're playing, the Penguins look formidable even without their captain. Evgeni Malkin scored his 37th goal of the season, Brad Thiessen made 21 saves in his NHL debut and the Penguins beat the visiting Columbus Blue Jackets, 4-2, yesterday.

Almost three weeks after the NHL trade deadline, the Penguins got the man they wanted. As several folks in the organization have said, no player would be a better acquisition for a run at the Stanley Cup than center and team captain Sidney Crosby. Sidney Crosby will appear in his 413th National Hockey League game Monday night at Consol Energy Center. Might not seem like it, though. Not to what could be the most-energized crowd in the young arena's history. And certainly not to Crosby, who has not participated in one since being diagnosed with a concussion Jan. 6. For that reason, Penguins coach Dan Bylsma said Sunday that Crosby figures to experience the emotions and excitement of a guy competing at this level for the first time.
