Penn State moved quickly Tuesday night to respond to a Sports Illustrated story that appeared to paint an unflattering portrait of the university's medical operation as it applies to football. The article is mentioned on the cover of this week's issue of the magazine with the headline "Do Athletics Still Have Too Much Power at Penn State?" It is expected to be released online Wednesday morning. A statement issued by Penn State said: "To characterize the medical care Penn State provides our student-athletes as anything other than the highest quality is erroneous.

Most Penn State fans with a computer monitor were tuned Thursday to Iowa Western Community College to find out whether record-breaking quarterback Jake Waters would become a Nittany Lion, the most anticipated announcement for a Penn State recruit since Terrelle Pryor in 2008. Sadly for Nittany Nation, Waters' decision did not go the Lions' way, as when Pryor chose Ohio State. The 6-foot-2, 215-pound Iowan announced he would attend Kansas State. "I really liked both schools," Waters said at a news conference shown on the Internet.

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. - It wasn't that long ago when Temple would go into a game against Penn State hoping to survive, and do a poor job of it. The Owls have lost by 47-0, 31-0, 45-3, and 31-6 to Joe Paterno's Nittany Lions since Al Golden took over as head coach in 2006. There were mistakes, penalties, turnovers, and some bad breaks - all part of the game, but all showing Temple how far it had to go. Now, in 2010, you wonder whether the Owls have turned the page. Thanks to a 3-0 start, their best since 1979, they appear to have flicked the switch from survival mode to competitive opponent, but they won't know for sure until Saturday evening how far they've come.

An insurance company covering Pennsylvania State University asked Philadelphia Common Pleas Court to limit its exposure from a lawsuit filed by an alleged sex-abuse victim of Jerry Sandusky. The Pennsylvania Manufacturers' Association Insurance Co. argued Tuesday in its filing that it may not be required to cover Penn State at all, depending on what is uncovered as developments emerge from the sex scandal. At stake are millions of dollars that the university could use to defend itself and, if necessary, pay out in a judgment.

FOXBORO, Mass. - It was hard to imagine that Bill O'Brien's transition from Patriots offensive coordinator to Penn State head coach could get any more delicate. But his task grew even more fraught with emotion Sunday when Joe Paterno died, leaving O'Brien to not only replace a legend but to do so while Penn State fans mourn their lionized coach. Paterno's death Sunday morning came as O'Brien prepared for the AFC championship game here, getting ready to help the Patriots reach the Super Bowl.

T he Pennsylvania State University child sex-abuse scandal has riveted the nation since criminal charges were announced Nov. 5. Requests for records that might reveal what school officials knew, and when, have placed the state's Office of Open Records in the cross fire - especially because Penn State, as a state-related and not state-run university, is exempt from the open-records law. On Monday, the office's executive director, Terry Mutchler, answered...

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. - Penn State running back Austin Scott did not dress for yesterday's game against Iowa because of an unspecified violation of team rules. "His status is very much in doubt as far as playing, period," coach Joe Paterno said. Paterno would not confirm whether Scott had been kicked off the team. According to a team source, his locker had been cleaned out. "I don't want to tell you what to speculate, because I might be speculating myself," Paterno said. "I don't think it's fair for me to get into anything right now. " According to Jeff Nelson, assistant athletic director for communications, Scott still was enrolled at Penn State.

Deion Barnes said it was all about the "comfortability factor. " And that played in favor of Penn State, not Georgia. In an announcement Thursday morning in his school's auditorium, the hard-charging defensive end from Northeast High committed to play for the Nittany Lions. Georgia was the runner-up for his services. "I wasn't an outcast when I went down to Georgia, but I felt like I was around 'my guys' when I went to Penn State," said Barnes, a 6-foot-5, 222-pound senior. "That was a big thing for me. " Barnes, celebrating his 18th birthday, said he had "been battling all week, going back and forth" between Penn State and Georgia, which he visited last weekend.
