A youth learns by accident that he possesses extraordinary powers, is dispatched to a special academy for those of his kind, and undertakes a quest with his two best buds to defeat the dark powers. Luke Skywalker? Harry Potter? Guess again: Percy Jackson, archetypal hero for the modern, emo middle schooler. Percy Jackson (Logan Lerman) is a loser. Because he has dyslexia, the question on the blackboard is too hard to decipher. Because he has ADHD, he can't focus. And because he has an abusive stepfather, Percy can't bear to be at home.

THIS WEEK'S DVD releases are a big bag of so-so. The most prominent title is "Green Zone," the failed Iraq thriller that reunited Matt Damon with "Bourne" collaborator Paul Greengrass, without much success. Younger viewers may prefer "Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief," but this is another kid-lit adaptation that failed to capture the appeal of the book and certainly failed to ignite another Harry Potter-like franchise. Teen girls prepping for next week's "Twilight" sequel might want to check out Robert Pattinson in a non-vampire role in "Remember Me," but then again they might not. Especially if they've seen it. Mom and dad might get something out of "The Last Station," a staid period and literary drama that scored Oscar nominations for Helen Mirren and Christopher Plummer.

The new year, and new decade, get going with new entries from a formidable trio of top-tier Hollywood auteurs: There's a lysergic-looking reimagining of Lewis Carroll's Alice in Wonderland from Tim Burton; a roiling Gothic thriller, Shutter Island, from the just-honored-at-the-Golden Globes Martin Scorsese, and a timely revisit to the trading floors in Oliver Stone's Wall Street sequel. In the horror vein, The Wolfman, with Benicio Del Toro in lycanthrope mode, looks hair-raising.

JUST IN TIME for Valentine's Day, Billboard has ranked the 50 sexiest songs (their words) by popularity. At No. 1 is Olivia Newton-John's "Physical," one of the worst songs she ever recorded, followed by Rod Stewart's "Tonight's the Night (Gonna Be Alright)," one of the worst songs he ever recorded. Adding to the craziness, Marvin Gaye's "Sexual Healing" came in at No. 35 while Starland Vocal Band's silly "Afternoon Delight" was at No. 20. Just because a song is about sex doesn't mean it's sexy.

MICHAEL VICK and DeSean Jackson did something after practice yesterday that they rarely did in the 4 years they played together under Andy Reid. They watched film together. No, they didn't sneak out of the NovaCare Complex to go watch "Kick-Ass 2" or "Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters. " They found a quiet room and reviewed some defensive video of the Eagles' third preseason opponent, the Jacksonville Jaguars. While watching film is mandatory for a quarterback, it's never been high on Jackson's list of priorities.
