PORTLAND, Maine - The Trenton Thunder, a double-A affiliate of the New York Yankees, didn't fare much better against the Boston Red Sox organization than their major-league parent yesterday. Kenny Perez's RBI single in the ninth inning gave the Portland Sea Dogs an 8-7 Eastern League win over the Thunder. The Yankees lost a Patriots Day matinee to the Red Sox, 5-4, in Boston. In Maine, the Thunder took a first-inning lead on a two-run homer by third baseman Andy Phillips, but later fell behind, 5-2. READING - Phillies second baseman Chase Utley went 0 for 5 Thursday on the second day of his rehabilitation assignment at double-A Reading, but he allowed for the possibility that he would be activated Friday for the weekend series with the New York Mets. He played the entire game in a 5-2 loss to the Portland Sea Dogs at FirstEnergy Stadium. Utley, who had been on the disabled list since May 23 with a strained right oblique muscle, swung freely and hit the ball hard in his final two times up, lining to left field in the seventh inning and flying out to deep right to end the game.

READING - It looked as if Chase Utley would score all the way from first after a looping single landed just inside the right-field line. Wednesday night was Utley's first rehabilitation start since he was placed on the disabled list May 23 with a strained right oblique muscle, and he went into third base at full speed. He eyed home plate. Reading manager Dusty Wathan threw up his hands. Utley, already 15 feet down the line, pivoted back to third. Utley likely would have scored standing up, and he later said he "played with no reservations," but forgive Wathan for being cautious.

Adam Eaton was torched for six earned runs and two homers, including a grand slam, in less than four innings last night as the Reading Phillies were hammered, 13-3, by the visiting Portland Sea Dogs. Throwing nothing but fastballs in the first inning as he worked on command of the pitch, Eaton also was partially victimized by an error in the five-run Portland first. A walk, the error and a hit batter loaded the bases, and Mark Wagner's single gave Portland a fast, 1-0, lead.
