The Union will open the season against the host Portland Timbers on Monday, March 12. Game time is 9:30 p.m. at Jeld-Wen Field with coverage on ESPN2, ESPN Deportes and ESPN3. The match will be just the 11th Monday game in MLS history. The Union are 0-1-1 against the Timbers, having dropped a 1-0 decision in Portland last May and playing the Timbers to a 0-0 draw at PPL Park in September. The Union returns to PPL Park to open the home portion of its season on Sunday, March 18. The opponent and time are to yet be announced.

The Union signed 18-year-old Cristian Hernandez as the team's third "homegrown player" to come from its youth academy. Hernandez will occupy an international roster spot and is eligible to play in the season opener against the Portland Timbers on March 12. Terms were not disclosed. Hernandez has played in reserve league matches for the Union and scored in the game-winner in a friendly against Everton last July. He attended St. Benedict's Prep in Newark, N.J., where he helped lead the team to a 24-0 record, a No. 1 ranking and the school's seventh national championship as a senior.

Amy Fisher , who went to prison for shooting her boyfriend's wife in the face long before she launched her porn career, will be dancing at the Oasis Gentlemen's Club (5200 Essington) from Thursday to Saturday. On Friday she will be taking boxing lessons from Feldman in preparation for an upcoming match she's fighting out of town.

TV: TCN Last MLS game: Portland defeated visiting Chivas USA, 1-0, on Aug. 24. The Union overcame a 4-1 halftime deficit to play the visiting New England Revolution to a 4-4 draw on Wednesday. Outlook: The Union entered the weekend ninth in a playoff field that will include 10 teams, while Portland was 11th. . . . Portland is 1-8-3 on the road while the Union are 5-1-7 at PPL Park.

On Monday, the Union signed forward Cristhian Hernandez as the club's third designated Homegrown Player (an initiative designed to give local players increased opportunities). A member of the Union Academy, the 18-year-old Hernandez has made appearances in Reserve League matches and had a first-team stint in the friendly against Everton in which he scored the game-winner in a 1-0 win on July 21, 2011. Born in Mexico, Hernandez will occupy an international roster spot and is eligible to play in the Union's season opener against the Portland Timbers next Monday.

The Union's home opener is set for March 18 at PPL Park, Major League Soccer announced. The league revealed the home opening dates for each team, but did not provide opponents. MLS will have six games on March 10, two on March 11 and one on March 12. It is possible that the Union would open on the road in one of those games. All but one MLS club will play at home by the end of Week 3. The entire regular season schedule is expected to be released by the end of the year.

Leaders of the cancer charity founded by Lance Armstrong struck a determined, sometimes defiant tone Thursday as they declared the organization will persevere in the wake of the cyclist's admission that he used performance-enhancing drugs. "I am on safe ground to say that the past year did not go as planned," Livestrong's executive vice president, Andy Miller , said at the Livestrong Foundation's annual meeting in Chicago. "This is our message to the world: The Livestrong Foundation is not going anywhere," Miller said.

Aston Villa finished 16th in the English Premier League standings this past season — only two spots away from relegation ... It will be a preseason match for Villa, but coach Paul Lambert said playing MLS competition during its midseason provides the best test: "The guys over in America are already in their seasons, which means they'll be tough opposition and it will help get everyone in the squad together," Lambert told the English newspaper Birmingham Mail.
