The last local contender, Lisa Raymond of Wayne, staged a strong finish but was sidelined by Jennifer Saberon of the Philippines, 6-2, 7-6 (11-9), in the quarterfinals of the USTA's Girls' International Grass Court Tennis Championship yesterday at the Philadelphia Cricket Club. Saberon, an incessant forecourt attacker, ended the 1-hour, 16-minute contest on the fifth match point with a curving serve that Raymond strained for and backhanded into the net. Off form and failing to repel Saberon's net charges until she was down 2-5 in the second set, Raymond suddenly began to show excellent strokework and rushed on to 5-5, fighting off two matchpoints - at 3-5 and 4-5. She had Saberon playing fearfully and cautiously as the score moved to 6-all.

It was definitely not your typical rundown. But then again, scoring the winning run in a quarterfinal playoff game on your 15th birthday isn't the usual way to celebrate turning another year older, either. For Lansdale Catholic freshman Ashley Seal, both were parts of her special day Thursday, as the Crusaders defeated Archbishop Ryan, 5-0, to advance in the Catholic League softball playoffs. Seal walked in the third inning and advanced to second on a sacrifice by Jenna Gibbons.

NEW YORK - St. Joseph's knew what to expect against a well-rested Virginia Commonwealth team, one that likes to make the opponents' tongues hang. Nothing was surprising in seeing the relentless pressure applied by second-seeded VCU or the final result. Tenth-seeded St. Joseph's hung in but eventually suffered an 82-79 Atlantic Ten quarterfinal loss Friday at the Barclays Center. St. Joseph's (18-13) will now await word on whether the NIT will consider the Hawks for the second year in a row. The Hawks were the preseason choice to win the A-10, but that type of powerful team never materialized.

ALLENTOWN - After getting hammered in its final game of one season, a basketball team with no seniors quickly looks forward to the next. How quickly? "I wish we could play them again right now . . . I wanted to win a state championship this year. " The kid who spoke those words was Floyd Preito, a 6-1, 175-pound junior wing guard who, truthfully, was the only Constitution High General to turn in a respectable performance Saturday afternoon at Parkland High in a PIAA Class AA state quarterfinal.

On some days, things just don't go well. Shots don't go in, passes aren't accurate, and bad bounces ruin plays. For Prep Charter, it was one of those games Saturday, when the Huskies fell to Bethlehem Catholic, 67-46, in the PIAA Class AAA girls' basketball quarterfinals at Spring-Ford. "Shots weren't falling, and the girls were getting down on themselves," Prep Charter coach Ashley Logue said. "They didn't stay together when things got down. " Bethlehem Catholic (27-2) opened the game with two three-pointers from sophomore guard Kalista Walters, and took momentum with a 15-6 run to start the game.

NEW YORK - Just six days ago, Temple seemed nearly invincible. Coming off a nationally televised blowout of No. 25 Virginia Commonwealth, which was their seventh straight win, the Owls appeared unstoppable in their quest for an Atlantic Ten tournament title. It didn't happen. Temple's seemingly well-oiled machine was wrecked by Massachusetts for the second consecutive season in the A-10 tourney quarterfinals. This time, the Minutemen prevailed, 79-74, on Friday night at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn.

NEW HOLLAND, Pa. - Some have called the Spring-Ford defense stifling. Stingy or oppressive are two more adjectives that sum up the Rams' performance when their opponent has the ball. In simpler terms, they merely play great team defense. Brittany Moore and Sammy Stipa provide the steals. Sarah Payonk blocks shots and intimidates opponents in the lane. Shelby Mueller pulls down rebounds. Sammi Haas harasses the opposing team's best player for the entire contest. And all the Rams play remarkable help defense.
