With the way La Salle's defense regularly stormed in on him, Parkland quarterback Tim Baranek did more dodging, most times in vain, than throwing. The Explorers, with an impressive effort from their front four, sacked Baranek an astounding 11 times and cruised to a 28-7 victory Saturday in a PIAA Class AAAA state quarterfinal at Northeast. "We just came out firing on all cylinders," said senior defensive end Jon Naji, who registered a team-high five sacks. "A lot of credit has to go to our coaches.

ALLIANCE, Ohio - It's difficult to defeat Mount Union, Division III's No. 1-ranked football team, anywhere, on any surface. Widener's task was compounded by trying to do it at Mount Union Stadium on Saturday with a paucity of road and playoff experience. Playing its first away game since Oct. 3 and first national quarterfinal since 2001, Widener sputtered in all phases of the game in a 72-17, season-ending rout. Mount Union won its 67th straight home game to advance to the semifinals for the 18th straight season.

Bristol's halftime lead proved futile on Friday night as the Warriors fell to Dunmore, 34-12, in the State Class A quarterfinals at Valley View. Willie Sutton's 1-yard touchdown run put Bristol ahead, 12-7, in the second quarter. It would be the last points the offense could produce as District 2 champion Dunmore rattled off 27 unanswered points. Tight end Tyler Kelly scored Bristol's first touchdown on a 38-yard pass from Trevor Leone to take a 7-6 lead late in the first quarter.

The formula for the Archbishop Wood football team was pretty simple on Friday night. Give the ball to Andrew Guckin. Need a first down? Guckin will take it for touchdown. Want to dump the ball off on a screen? Guckin will take it 41 yards. How about from the 2-yard line - can the senior tailback get it in the end zone? Yep. Against Interboro, Guckin's 133 rushing yards and four touchdowns helped the Vikings sail to victory, 35-7, in a PIAA Class AAA state quarterfinal at Plymouth Whitemarsh.

ONLY THREE of the city leagues' 49 teams remain active as we head into Week 14 of the football season, but you won't be able to see each game in its entirety. Friday night will present no problems as Archbishop Wood - 7 p.m., vs. Interboro, at Plymouth-Whitemarsh in a Class AAA quarterfinal - will be the only team in action. Come Saturday afternoon, well, you'll have to make a choice. Also in quarterfinals, it will be La Salle vs. Parkland in AAAA, 1 p.m. at Northeast, and Imhotep vs. Pen Argyl in AA, 1 p.m. at Northern Lehigh, in Slatington, about 20 miles north of Allentown.

The high-powered offense didn't put up the amount of points it customarily did this season, but it didn't matter. A special 2012 campaign for Widener football lives on for at least another week in large part because of its defense. Facing a triple-option offense for the first time didn't faze the Pride. Behind a stout defensive showing on Saturday afternoon, ninth-ranked Widener (12-0) advanced to the quarterfinals of the Division III NCAA tournament with a 28-7 win over 11th-ranked Salisbury at Quick Stadium.

Four times this season the Bristol football team has held its opponent to single digits. The fewest number of points the Warriors have allowed in a game this season is six, while they gave up seven points in three other wins this year. But holding the other team scoreless had been elusive all season long, even though it was something head coach Leo Plenski and the rest of the Bristol coaching squad preached. The Warriors sure picked the right time to pitch a shutout. In the first round of the Class A state tournament at Souderton, Bristol upset Williams Valley, 20-0, earning the right to play in the quarterfinals next week.

At this time of year, after 21/2 months of use, Poppy Yoder Field is more dirt than grass. The Perkasie field could take its biggest pounding Friday night, when Pennsbury and Pennridge, two run-oriented teams, clash in a PIAA District 1 Class AAAA quarterfinal. Pennsbury's wing-T offense is powered by halfback Shawn Pepper, who has rushed for 1,320 yards and 13 touchdowns, and bulldozing fullback Daquan Mack. For the Rams, junior halfback Mike Class, in a wing-T, power scheme, has carried 248 times for an area-best 2,201 yards and 29 TDs. Sixth-seeded Pennsbury is trying for its first district championship since 2006.
