Santana Moss and Antwaan Randle El were unable to practice again yesterday, putting Washington in a perilous position at receiver for tomorrow's game against the Eagles. Moss is sidelined with a bruised heel and is listed as questionable on the injury report, but neither Moss nor coach Joe Gibbs sounded optimistic that it would heal sufficiently before game time. Randle El has had a relapse of a nagging hamstring injury. He is listed as probable. The Redskins are the only team in the NFL without a touchdown pass to a wide receiver this season.

If the Eagles had any interest in Reggie Wayne, they're disappointed today. The Indianapolis Colts' wide receiver, who would have become a free agent, agreed to a $39 million, 6-year contract yesterday, a move that makes him one of the NFL's highest-paid receivers and allows the Colts to use their franchise tag on another player if they choose. Wayne's deal includes a $13.5 million signing bonus. "He's thrilled, he could not think more highly of the owner, Jimmy [Irsay], [president]

Don't blame David Coleman if he sometimes does not pay rapt attention in his health-related-technology classes. He now envisions a different path for his life. "I want to be a social worker," Coleman said. "I got that inspiration from my aunt, Gertrude Coleman, who I've lived with since I was 2. She went back to school - first to Community, then Temple - to get her degree and become a social worker. "The same way I'm proud of her, I want to go on to college, get a job in that same field and make everybody proud of me. " Coleman, a 6-foot, 185-pound senior, is a tight end and linebacker for Murrell Dobbins Tech's football team.

After three weeks of spring drills, Temple football coach Bobby Wallace handed out black jerseys to 10 members of the defensive unit. The shirts went to players Wallace identified as "proven winners," ready to go to war. "I'd like to have 15 or 16 black shirts," said Wallace, who will conduct his fifth Cherry and White game Saturday at Temple Stadium to conclude the spring session. "Guys take a lot of pride in those black shirts, and it's a motivational tool for guys to get to that point and be part of that group," he said.

Carolina Panthers defensive tackle Brentson Buckner was suspended for four games yesterday for violating the NFL's steroid policy. Buckner is a vital part of Carolina's defense, which ranks fourth in the league. He has four sacks, 23 tackles and a forced fumble. The suspension will cost him $250,000 to $300,000 in salary and incentives, according to Buckner's agent, George Mavrikes. Mavrikes said Buckner took a diet pill before training camp with an ingredient that's on the league's list of banned substances.

A quarter of a century can be a long time. In 1987, Heisman Trophy runner-up Paul Palmer, who'd led the nation in rushing the previous season, was taken by Kansas City with the 19th pick in the NFL draft. The year before, Temple offensive lineman John Rienstra had gone to the Steelers with the ninth selection. Until now, those were the only two times that an Owl was ever taken in the opening round. Muhammad Wilkerson, a 6-4, 315-pound defensive lineman who opted to leave school a year early, joined them late last night when the New York Jets chose him at the 30th spot.

Raheem Brock, the Temple University and NFL defensive standout, has been acquitted of skipping out on a $27 bill from a South Street bar last spring. Brock, 33, who was charged with theft and resisting arrest shortly after leaving Copabanana with his cousin and a friend on June 16, was found not guilty of the theft charge Thursday after a two-day trial at the Criminal Justice Center. He had been cleared of the resisting-arrest charge at a previous trial. "It feels great," Brock said Friday.

If food is your thing, Terrance Knighton insists the place to be this weekend is his grandmother's house in Connecticut. That's where Temple's 6-3 senior defensive tackle plans to hang out, along with his "mom, brothers, aunt and girlfriend," as they watch the NFL draft together to finally find out where his immediate future is headed. "She'll [cook] everything in the fridge, Saturday and Sunday," Knighton predicted, no doubt from repeated experiences. So, it'll pretty much be like having Thanksgiving squared?

When the Indianapolis Colts' defensive players lined up for media day at Sun Life Stadium, Dwight Freeney got more attention than any of his teammates. That's usually what happens when the Colts' defensive players line up to play a football game, too. Freeney's 92 career sacks - 84 in the regular season and eight more in the postseason - since the Colts astutely made him a first-round pick in 2002 are more than any other player in the league during that time period. That's the kind of thing that keeps an offensive coordinator up at night.
