Lynn Yeakel must show voters that she's the only pro-choice woman running in the Democratic primary for governor, a national fund-raiser said yesterday. By emphasizing that distinction, Yeakel can easily distinguish herself in the crowded field of four men and two women, said Ellen Malcolm, head of a leading fund-raising organization for female candidates. Catherine Baker Knoll is the other woman and the only anti-abortion Democrat in the primary race. Malcolm heads EMILY's List, which stands for Early Money is Like Yeast, and was in town yesterday for a fund-raiser.

Alexander Talmadge Jr., the financial underdog in next Tuesday's Democratic primary for the district attorney's race, failed to list contributions from at least one fund-raiser in his latest campaign finance report. Talmadge attended an April 26 fund-raiser at McGlawn & McGlawn Inc., a mortgage and insurance company just over the city line in Elkins Park. Yet no contributions collected during that 90-minute evening event, which drew about 50 people, were listed in the report Talmadge filed Friday afternoon.

A $250-a-person fund-raiser held at the townhouse of interim U.S. Attorney Laurie Magid has drawn the attention of the Justice Department's Office of Inspector General, according to people familiar with the inquiry. Investigators are examining whether a law that limits the political activities of federal employees has been violated, those sources said. The Jan. 30 fund-raiser was held for former U.S. Attorney Patrick L. Meehan, a likely Republican candidate for governor in 2010.

A visit by President Obama to Center City this afternoon to attend a fund-raiser for U.S. Sen. Arlen Specter promises to add a tangle of street closures, protesters, and gawkers to the usual mayhem of rush hour. Air Force One is expected to touch down at the Philadelphia International Airport about 3:45 p.m., before Obama, Specter, and their entourages motorcade to the Convention Center for the event. As many as 1,000 people are expected to attend an invitation-only reception and dinner, which the campaign hopes will raise $2.5 million for Specter and the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee.

Former Pennsylvania Congressman Bob Edgar has left his post as finance chairman for Democratic presidential contender Paul Simon, but he said yesterday that he had no plans to return to his home state or to politics. Edgar, who has been working since last spring as Simon's chief fund-raiser, said that his departure was voluntary and that it marked only a transition from a paid to an unpaid post in the campaign. "As a 44-year-old adult I've got to do real work," said Edgar, who served six terms in Congress representing suburban Delaware County and parts of Southwest Philadelphia.

When the magazine millionaire Steve Forbes started his campaign last September, he was a stumbling, self-conscious presidential candidate more inclined to follow his prep school training and hang out politely in the back of a room. Last night, the Republican worked the 20 or so tables at a lavish Four Seasons Hotel fund-raiser before he started his road show, which included an eight-minute video and a routine by comedian Joan Rivers. He also took thousands of dollars from Philadelphia-area business people.

With almost every stride he takes these days, marathon runner Andrew Shanks thinks of the aspiring young teacher who was killed for an iPod Classic. In June, Beau Zabel, the 23-year-old who moved here in May from Austin, Minn., was shot to death on his way home from working at a Starbucks store. In his memory, a fund-raiser will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. tomorrow at the Starbucks at Fourth and South Streets. The first $600 raised will sponsor Shanks to run in his honor. Additional proceeds will go to a memorial scholarship.

Ending a rift that began six months ago, Gov. Rendell and Mayor Street will make their reunion public tonight at a reception here to raise money to help elect Sen. John Kerry. The fund-raiser, which will include $25,000-a-plate dinners at the Franklin Institute, is the presidential candidate's first trip to Philadelphia since he became his party's nominee almost four weeks ago at the Democratic National Convention in Boston. Barred from raising his own campaign cash since he has accepted public financing, Kerry tonight will raise money for the Democratic National Committee to spend between now and Election Day. "This is very, very important money," said Philadelphia lawyer Mark Alderman, Kerry's chief Pennsylvania fund-raiser.

When Kathy Brooks died from diabetes in 1986, her husband, friends and family organized a casual "beef and beer" fund-raiser to memorialize her and say good-bye. That first year, about 400 people came - about double the number they had expected - and the evening raised about $5,000 for diabetes education. "Everybody just pitched in - the whole community," said Ellen Musmeci, one of Brooks' sisters. "Kathy had a lot of friends. " Ten years later, the Kathy Behan Brooks Memorial Fund-raiser is still going strong, thanks to the people whose help made that first event such a success.
