HARRISON, N.J. - The Union better hope the adage "defense wins championships" holds weight, because its offense has far too many holes as the team's quest for the MLS Cup begins. In its final game of the regular season Thursday night at Red Bull Arena, the Union lost, 1-0, and was flat-out exposed on prime-time television by a New York side hungry for one of the final playoff spots. The Union (11-8-15, 48 points) which already clinched a postseason berth, was playing for a chance at the top seed in the Eastern Conference.

HARRISON, N.J. - Faryd Mondragon didn't get by with any help from his MLS All-Star friends last night, allowing a pair of goals in his first-half start en route to a 4-0 defeat to Manchester United. For the second straight year, Manchester United trumped MLS' best, this time at Red Bull Arena. Last year, it was a 5-2 defeat of the All-Stars at the Home Depot Center in Carson, Calif. Manchester's Anderson got things rolling in the 20th minute beating Mondragon with a shot to his right corner.

Red Bull Arena has not been the most congenial of venues for the Union. They are winless at New York's home stadium, 0-5-0 all-time on the road against the Red Bulls. The Union (10-7-7) will look to change that this Saturday as they travel to New York for an 8 p.m. kickoff in their final regular season matchup with the conference foe. The teams split two prior meetings this year. "It's an arena and a team that when we've gone up there it hasn't been the most hospitable to us," Union manager John Hackworth told reporters Wednesday.

MLS COMMISSIONER Don Garber ventured via regional rail from New York to Philadelphia yesterday to announce that PPL Park would be the venue for this year's All-Star Game. It was a surprisingly unusual way for Garber to travel, but considering rumor and speculation all but confirmed that the Union won hosting rights before his arrival, it's possible his mindset was on saving a buck, even as he confirmed MLS' worst-kept secret. Inside the Mayor's Reception Room at City Hall, Garber said this year's event, against an opponent to be announced "within the next 60 days," will be held at the Union's picturesque stadium on Chester's waterfront.

IT'S HAPPENED. Not often, but it has happened. According to the Elias Sports Bureau, only seven teams have advanced after losing the first leg in the 16-year-history of the MLS playoffs. Of those seven, just two have advanced after losing the first leg at home: Colorado knocked off FC Dallas in 2006 and just last year, San Jose battled back from a 1-0 deficit in the first leg to win, 3-1, at Red Bull Arena in the second, sneaking past RBNY on aggregate, 3-2. The Union finds itself in a similar predicament, down 2-1 to Houston in the two-leg conference semifinal aggregate series after dropping the first leg at home on Sunday.
