"Repo Men" takes place in a near-future society run by corporations that repossesses organs from transplant patients who can't pay for them. The movie plays this premise for macabre laughs and sometimes gets them - there is a decent, tough-guy buddy movie chemistry between Jude Law and Forest Whitaker as the hard-nosed repo men who taser "deadbeat" clients, then do on-the-spot (and exceedingly graphic) reclamation of livers, kidneys, hearts. Liev Schreiber also has some choice moments as their boss, a slick corporate shill who persuades desperate people to purchase organs they really can't afford.

His job may be to fix teeth, but one Delaware County dentist has been accused of trying to bust some. Already under federal indictment for allegedly filing false tax returns, Richard Kaufman, 60, who has a dentistry practice in Newtown Square, now faces assault charges in Glen Mills after police said he and a buddy beat two men who tried to repossess Kaufman's car last week. Police said two men from Stealth Recovery Repossession Co. arrived at Kaufman's house on Ivy Lane in Glen Mills about 11 p.m. Thursday to repossess his 2006 Jeep Commander, but their knocks at his doors went unanswered.

You are now entering Repo Reality: Somewhere out on the dark side streets, or tucked away in the fringe neighborhoods of Philadelphia, there was a gold 1988 Hyundai Excel, parked by the curbside pretty as a trophy. Two months ago, the car's owner had walked onto a dealer's lot and then signed a loan agreement with a Philadelphia bank. The value of the contract: $13,124.14. Sixty days after driving away, the new owner had yet to make his first payment of $218.59 per month.

The judge got a firsthand look at the tragic aftermath of a car repossession gone haywire. Sitting in the witness box was repo man Edwin Simmons, 25, his face scarred, barely able to speak after being shot in the neck by one of 10 bullets that tore through his body Oct. 4. in Fishtown. A few feet away, sitting at the defense table, next to lawyer Paul Hetznecker, was the alleged gunman, Jack Gilin, 36. He was in bad shape, too. His neck was braced, and he had limped into the courtroom, supported by a cane.

Like triumphant fishermen reeling in the night's catch, Kevin Clark and his partner hooked chains to the Chevy sedan's underbelly as their truck's motorized winch slowly, inexorably, hoisted it onto the flatbed. This one had gone quietly, the car's owner wearily poking her head out her front door at 12:50 a.m. yesterday as police explained that the repo men had come. Without argument or hesitation, she handed Clark the keys. The 40-year-old former butcher was not looking for excitement.
