LOS ANGELES - Fire Capt. Art Hurtado was making an off-duty visit to a Home Depot store Wednesday when he encountered a horrific sight - a man had deliberately cut his own arms to the bone with handsaws. As others screamed, the veteran paramedic used materials from store shelves to stanch the bleeding. "I kind of MacGyver-ed it," Hurtado said Thursday, referring to the old TV drama about a secret agent who used whatever materials he could find to solve problems. The victim of the self-mutilation remained hospitalized in critical condition as investigators tried to determine why he hurt himself.

The naming of Mr. Jackson's son, Prince Michael, is not an attempt to "start up a royalty line. In the world of high fashion, nothing says "Look at me!" more than Versace's Medusa logo. The trendlet These days, the bigger the golden head of Medusa, the more expensive the high-top sneaker. Label-obsessed dandies pair the kicks with distressed jeans and button-down shirts or quilted sweatshirts for nights out at the club. Collectors leave their precious patent-leather Medusa high-tops in plastic, kept pristine in boxes. Where's it come from? In Greek mythology, Medusa is a she-monster with snakes for hair, so one look at the old girl will turn you into stone.

Just in time for her close-to-sold-out concerts tonight and tomorrow at the Linc, Taylor Swift has made her couplehood official via Instagram. Swift and DJ Calvin Harris are dating, as indicated by a romantically blurry photo of the couple riding an inflatable swan in a pool. In April, the laptop jockey posted a shot of the singer-songwriter's cats, a clear sign that the twosome was together - and serious. The days since have provided glimpses of romance, celebrity-style: A hug at the Billboard Awards, a trip to a Nashville Whole Foods, a meal out in L.A., rumors of a vegan barbecue hosted by the $1 million-a-gig Harris for the $1 million-a-glance-your-way Swift and friends.

The first thing I'll say about Adrienne Truscott's Asking for It is that it's smart. Her one-woman stand-up presented by Simpatico Theatre Project asks hard, sometimes humorous questions about the use of rape jokes in comedy and deals with them in a sly, sophisticated manner. I'll start with her shtick - and no, I'm not referring to Truscott's performing most of her 75-minute show naked from the waist down. During the show, the New York-based choreographer-turned-comedian wears a big blond wig, oversize bra, and midwaist jean jacket.

WELL, we've learned at least one thing from the June 7 car crash that injured funny guy Tracy Morgan : There's no grass growing under his lawyers. Almost simultaneously with the news that the former "30 Rock" co-star had been released from a rehab facility to continue mending at home came word that Morgan has filed suit against Walmart, which owns the truck that hit Morgan's limo-bus as it took the comic and his entourage back to New York from a gig at Delaware's Dover Downs casino.

THE BET Awards are the most casual of the awards shows (anything but black tie goes), the most self-promotional (rare was the presenter who didn't a push a TV show, movie or album) and the most sponsored. It seemed as if not a minute went by without seeing a logo or hearing a product placement. Strong on music (auto-tuning and backing tracks allowed) and spectacle, the BET Awards suffer from some of the same problem as the Grammys: In attempting to lure younger viewers, the show makes it seem as if there are no black entertainers over 40 - no singers who don't come out of rap and hip-hop.

It's a declaration of purpose: Lickety Split is an amped-up party album that rarely pauses for breath. Randolph is a peerless pedal steel player, and his roots in the sacred steel church tradition surface in "Born Again," a secular love song that crosses classic gospel lyrics with Stephen Stills' "Love the One You're With.

Purling Hiss Philadelphia psych-rock band Purling Hiss adds pop hooks to the mix on its tightened-up new release, Water on Mars , their first on the Drag City label. Singer Mike Polizzi, who formerly fronted the noisier-still Birds of Maya, is a formidable guitarist with a variety of musical moves that come through in higher fidelity than on previous homemade releases. And as they showed when opening for brothers-in-rock the War on Drugs at Johnny Brenda's back in December, Purling Hiss is expert at pounding out purifying sludge catharsis.
