If you want to know how the 76ers are looking to build their team, the Oklahoma City Thunder are a perfect example. Oklahoma City has one of the NBA's elite franchises, averaging 54 wins over the last five seasons. Even that's a bit misleading because of the strike-shortened 2011-12 season. The Thunder finished 47-19 that season and advanced to the NBA Finals. But heading into the 2008 draft, the franchise had countless similarities to the present-day Sixers. (At the time, the Thunder were the Seattle SuperSonics before they relocated to Oklahoma City for the 2008-09 season.)

There's no telling how different the Wizards would be if they had drafted Ricky Rubio when they had the chance. Surely they couldn't be any worse than what they are now: a winless team that might make a run at the 1972-73 Sixers' 9-73 record. Kevin Love and Rubio (a No. 5 overall pick Minnesota acquired from the Wizards in 2009) controlled the game in the 93-72 win for the visiting Minnesota Timberwolves on Sunday, while the Wizards were showered with boos during a 12-point fourth quarter as they dropped to 0-8. "There's really not much to say," Washington coach Flip Saunders said.

Dwyane Wade's jumper with 0.1 seconds left in overtime gave Miami a 93-91 victory over the Indiana Pacers on Saturday night, extending the Heat's home-court winning streak to 12 games. Wade scored 28 points and LeBron James finished with 27 for the Heat. James helped to force overtime by hitting a game-tying three-pointer with 10.2 seconds left in regulation, then not allowing Indiana's Darren Collison to get a potential game-winning shot off. The 76ers are being treated like a national joke for their futility. Phoenix Suns point guard Eric Bledsoe said that Kentucky, his alma mater, would hold the Sixers to one win in a seven-game series. ESPN has been poking fun at the franchise on a daily basis. So how does Kevin Durant, the reigning NBA MVP, feel about the 1-17 Sixers? "They've been playing hard," Durant said a day after the Sixers avoided the worst start in NBA history by posting their first victory of the season, beating the Minnesota Timberwolves, 85-77, Wednesday night at the Target Center in Minneapolis.

Ricky Rubio plans to part ways with Spanish basketball club DKV Joventut even if the Minnesota Timberwolves cannot reach a deal to bring their first round draft pick to the NBA. Rubio is at odds with his boyhood club over a buyout clause that could cost the 18-year-old point guard as much as $6.6 million. The NBA's collective bargaining rules limit the Timberwolves' contribution to $500,000. Regardless of whether Rubio makes the trip across the Atlantic next season, he won't be playing at Joventut.

He said he appreciated team owner U.S. Sen. Herb Kohl (D., Wisc.) and general manager John Hammond giving him permission to miss the games.

Two-time all-star Kevin Love broke his right hand Wednesday in a morning workout with the Minnesota Timberwolves. He is expected to be sidelined for six to eight weeks. Love broke the third and fourth metacarpals in his shooting hand. It is a crushing blow to the Timberwolves, who already will be without star point guard Ricky Rubio for what is expected to be at least the first six weeks of the regular season while he recovers from a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee.

Thaddeus Young spent his first seven seasons with the 76ers, so his return for the first time since his offseason trade promises to be emotional. Young and the Minnesota Timberwolves will make their only visit of the season to the Wells Fargo Center on Friday. The Timberwolves (8-37) have struggled even more than the 9-37 Sixers. It has been an injury-plagued season in Minnesota, with the biggest loss being point guard Ricky Rubio, who has been sidelined with an ankle injury since Nov. 7. "It will be emotional returning," Young said Thursday by telephone after the Timberwolves practiced.

Thaddeus Young is very happy about his new home in Minnesota, while also being appreciative of his time at his old one. The former 76ers forward, who was traded last week to the Timberwolves, is joining a team that hasn't been to the postseason since the 2003-04 season. Yet with young acquisitions such as Andrew Wiggins and Anthony Bennett along with first-round pick Zach LaVine of UCLA, plus established center Nikola Pekovic and point guard Ricky Rubio, the Wolves have potential.

DWIGHT HOWARD scored a season-high 39 points, had 16 rebounds and was sent to the free throw line 39 times by his former team as the Los Angeles Lakers beat the host Orlando Magic, 106-97, on Tuesday night. He went 25-for-39. The majority of them came as the Magic tried to employ an intentional foul strategy.
