MINNEAPOLIS - Few people know Jahlil Okafor's basketball game better than Minnesota Timberwolves rookie guard Tyus Jones. They met as third-graders at the AAU nationals and have been friends since, through high school and as teammates for one magical season at Duke, where they won the national title last April. While he could have gone to any college, Okafor has said he wanted to make sure that where he went wasn't only the right fit for him, but also for Jones. Duke was just that for the two, as Okafor was a first-team All-America and Jones scored 23 in the national title win over Wisconsin.

Thaddeus Young spent his first seven seasons with the 76ers, so his return for the first time since his offseason trade promises to be emotional. Young and the Minnesota Timberwolves will make their only visit of the season to the Wells Fargo Center on Friday. The Timberwolves (8-37) have struggled even more than the 9-37 Sixers. It has been an injury-plagued season in Minnesota, with the biggest loss being point guard Ricky Rubio, who has been sidelined with an ankle injury since Nov. 7. "It will be emotional returning," Young said Thursday by telephone after the Timberwolves practiced.

The 76ers are being treated like a national joke for their futility. Phoenix Suns point guard Eric Bledsoe said that Kentucky, his alma mater, would hold the Sixers to one win in a seven-game series. ESPN has been poking fun at the franchise on a daily basis. So how does Kevin Durant, the reigning NBA MVP, feel about the 1-17 Sixers? "They've been playing hard," Durant said a day after the Sixers avoided the worst start in NBA history by posting their first victory of the season, beating the Minnesota Timberwolves, 85-77, Wednesday night at the Target Center in Minneapolis.

MINNEAPOLIS - Finally, the 76ers experienced that winning feeling again. They avoided the worst start in NBA history by posting their first victory of the season, beating the Minnesota Timberwolves, 85-77, Wednesday night at the Target Center. "For me personally, I think it's a big relief off my chest and the same with the rest of the guys," Sixers point guard Michael Carter-Williams said. "They said they feel more relaxed now that we got a win. I think we can build off this and get some more wins.

Thaddeus Young is very happy about his new home in Minnesota, while also being appreciative of his time at his old one. The former 76ers forward, who was traded last week to the Timberwolves, is joining a team that hasn't been to the postseason since the 2003-04 season. Yet with young acquisitions such as Andrew Wiggins and Anthony Bennett along with first-round pick Zach LaVine of UCLA, plus established center Nikola Pekovic and point guard Ricky Rubio, the Wolves have potential.

If you want to know how the 76ers are looking to build their team, the Oklahoma City Thunder are a perfect example. Oklahoma City has one of the NBA's elite franchises, averaging 54 wins over the last five seasons. Even that's a bit misleading because of the strike-shortened 2011-12 season. The Thunder finished 47-19 that season and advanced to the NBA Finals. But heading into the 2008 draft, the franchise had countless similarities to the present-day Sixers. (At the time, the Thunder were the Seattle SuperSonics before they relocated to Oklahoma City for the 2008-09 season.)

Carmelo Anthony scored 40 points, Raymond Felton had three straight baskets in a key spurt, and the New York Knicks beat the host Atlanta Hawks, 95-82, on Wednesday night for their 10th straight victory. Anthony, coming off a 50-point effort against Miami on Tuesday, scored 24 points in the first half. He shot 17 of 27 from the field and was 5 for 6 from the free-throw line. Wolves 107, Bucks 98 Nikola Pekovic scored 27 points and Ricky Rubio added 18 points, 12 assists and 8 steals to lead the visiting Minnesota Timberwolves to a 107-98 win over the Milwaukee Bucks.

LeBron James scored 36 points, hitting six consecutive three-pointers in less than six minutes during the first half, and the Miami Heat rebounded from their first loss in nearly two months to beat the Hornets, 108-89, Friday night in New Orleans. The Heat, whose 27-game winning streak ended in Chicago on Wednesday, looked ready to start a new one while clinching the top seed for the Eastern Conference playoffs. James kept shooting three-pointers after making his first one with 1 minute, 55 seconds left in the first quarter, and he did not miss until he already had set a season high with his sixth.

AMARE STOUDEMIRE said Thursday his recovery from right knee surgery is going "a little bit ahead of schedule," though he isn't sure if he can return to the New York Knicks for the first round of the playoffs. Stoudemire had surgery to clean up and remove tissue from the knee about 2 1/2 weeks ago and the Knicks said his expected recovery time would be about 6 weeks. The playoffs open the weekend of April 20. "It's going well. Actually going a little bit ahead of schedule right now, so I want to keep that progress going," Stoudemire said in a phone interview.

DWIGHT HOWARD scored a season-high 39 points, had 16 rebounds and was sent to the free throw line 39 times by his former team as the Los Angeles Lakers beat the host Orlando Magic, 106-97, on Tuesday night. The victory came in Howard's first return to Orlando since his drama-filled offseason trade to the Lakers. He endured a chorus of boos throughout, and tied his own NBA record for free-throw attempts. He went 25-for-39. The majority of them came as the Magic tried to employ an intentional foul strategy.
