A 23-year-old man was fatally shot Wednesday at a gas station in North Philadelphia, police said. The man was shot several times at the BP station at Broad Street and Glenwood Avenue about 9 p.m., police said. He was pronounced dead at Temple University Hospital at 9:17. A 50-year-old man was in critical condition after being shot Thursday night in the city's Ogontz section, police said. Shortly after 10:30 p.m., the teen was shot twice in the upper left torso at Atlantic and Jasper Streets, police said. Police took him to Temple University Hospital. PHILADELPHIA The off-duty Philadelphia police officer who was shot and wounded near his Overbrook home early Sunday was released from the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania on Monday evening, said police spokeswoman Officer Tanya Little. Officer Robert Penn, 46, had just finished his shift and was wearing street clothes when he parked his car along Brentwood Road about 12:10 a.m., police said. He told investigators that after he got out of the vehicle, an unknown man approached him from behind, muttered something, and fired once.

Bucks County rescue crews searched for at least one swimmer who disappeared Tuesday night in the Neshaminy Creek, authorities said. About 10:20 p.m., two people were reported in need of help in the creek near SEPTA's Neshaminy Falls station, authorities said. One person reportedly was pulled from the water. A 2-year-old girl was killed when she ran in front of a car Wednesday night in the city's Point Breeze section, police said. About 8:20 p.m., the car struck the girl in the 1200 block of South 21st Street, police said. The driver stopped and remained at the scene. A 19-year-old man was killed in a car crash Tuesday afternoon that injured the second driver, police said. About 4:40 p.m., a red 2001 Ford Taurus was heading south on Lincoln Drive near Morris Street when it veered into the path of a northbound white 2002 Toyota Tacoma, police said. Both vehicles burst into flames. The driver of the Taurus was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the Toyota, a 31-year-old man, was taken to Einstein Medical Center and reported in stable condition.

A 34-year-old man was fatally shot Thursday afternoon in the city's East Germantown section, police said. The man, whose name was not released, was shot in the groin about 12:47 p.m. in the 900 block of East Church Lane, police said. A 43-year-old paraplegic was in critical condition after being found stabbed Monday night in Southwest Philadelphia, police said. About 7:10 p.m., the man was found stabbed in the 6200 block of Eastwick Avenue, where he lives at an assisted-living facility, police said. He had been involved in an altercation with a 40-year-old man over a female resident whom the second man was visiting, police said. In the attack, the victim's testicles were cut off, police said. The victim was taken to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania.

A 37-year-old South Jersey man pleaded guilty Thursday to loan sharking on behalf of the Philadelphia mob, federal prosecutors said. Robert Ranieri, of Glendora, admitted that he conspired with Philadelphia mobster Anthony Staino and others to make a usurious loan to an undercover FBI agent and then threatened violence to collect on the loan, according to federal prosecutors. Ranieri's sentencing hearing is scheduled for Sept. 25 and he faces a maximum 40 years in prison. - Robert Moran

Police fatally shot a 21-year-old man who allegedly pointed a gun at officers Thursday night in Southwest Philadelphia. Shortly before 9 p.m., two 12th District officers on patrol in the 7000 block of Saybrook Avenue attempted to stop a man on the street when he ran off, said Chief Inspector Scott Small. One officer jumped out of the cruiser to chase the man while the other continued driving the vehicle, Small said. When they confronted the man in the 7000 block of Paschall Street, he allegedly pulled a loaded 9mm Ruger from his waistband and aimed at them, Small said.

FERN ROCK A 23-year-old man was injured late Friday afternoon when he was hit by a SEPTA bus in the city's Fern Rock section, an agency spokesman said. About 5:50 p.m., the man was struck by a Route 70 bus at 11th Street and Nedro Avenue, said SEPTA spokesman Andrew Busch. He was taken to Einstein Medical Center with injuries that were not life-threatening. The cause of the accident is under investigation, Busch said. - Robert Moran
