ONCE AGAIN we come to that creepy crossroad of celebrity gossip, forcing us to rethink everything we know about a certain star and our role in the making and unmaking of his carefully cultivated image. Since "Twilight" went into production, the tabs and mags have offered up one story after another about stars Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart. They're together. They're not together. They're madly in love. It's over between them. They're just friends. They're actual vampires.

ROBERT PATTINSON is moving on. At least moviewise. He uses "Cosmopolis" to obliterate his "Twilight" persona, that of the chaste, PG suitor who sublimates physical desire and, for the sake of love, waits until marriage (before turning his wife into a vampire). In the deeply R-rated "Cosmopolis," he's Ed Packer, a hedge-fund guy and a predatory philanderer who pesters his wife for sex, and, getting nowhere on that front, proceeds to engage women in the back seat of his limo, in full view of his security detail, one of whom he also beds.

LOS ANGELES - Robert Pattinson has nothing but love for his recent experience on the set of "Water for Elephants," director Francis Lawrence's adaptation of the popular novel that opens in theaters today. It was a far cry from his current job, finishing the grueling six-month shoot for the back-to-back filming of the last two "Twilight" films, based on Stephenie Meyer's final book in her best-selling series of young adult novels, "Breaking Dawn. " Pattinson took a moment for a brief phone interview before he was needed on the set of a night shoot for the vampire megahit.

It's a weird celeb world. Film stars now routinely draw out breakups (see Justin Bieber / Selena Gomez , below) forever for the PR of it. Some (we won't say who) (you know) may even get married or pregnant for PR. Breakup case in point: Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson . The much-lusted-after stars of the Twilight film franchise have yo-yo'd us all since 2008: Were they together? Apart? Was it all a dream? Then, last summer, K-Stew got naughty with director Rupert Sanders , R-Patt got hurt, and they split.

Hear about the fans who stormed Robert Pattinson last week at a San Francisco galleria? OMG! In the rush to glimpse the guy who plays Edward Cullen, vampire hero of Twilight, one teen broke her nose. Another fainted. Or about the 500 Pattinson devotees in front of the Apple Store in New York's SoHo who chased the actor down Prince Street? Or about the 7-year-old inside the store who shyly approached Pattinson before bluntly asking him to bite her neck? And how about that uproar at King of Prussia last Thursday when the 22-year-old Brit was greeted by a teen army of more than a thousand screamingshriekingsquealing Twi-hards?

EDWARD MAY have gotten the girl, but it's Jacob who is the shape-shifting spirit of the "Twilight" movie franchise. A third of the audience views the movies as a wildly satisfying romance, a third views them as hilarious comedy, and another third is somehow content to see the movies jump back and forth between these opposing forms. Everybody seems deliriously happy. To sit at a screening is to hear sighs and snickers occurring almost at once - something the filmmakers appear to understand, and to play without shame or adherence to rules of tone or internal logic.

Twilight, due out today on DVD, has been hyped as the greatest love story since Titanic. But unlike that bloated sea monster, which suffocated its lovers with heaps of cinematic baloney, Catherine Hardwicke's love story is, for lack of a better word, pure. It's an anachronistic romance between a vampire (sultry heartthrob Robert Pattinson) and an intensely private 17-year-old girl (Kristen Stewart, in a revelatory performance) who never take their clothes off. It shows that making an emotional connection is more dangerous than doing American Pie-style sexual calisthenics.

Lucy, the scary version Residents of Celoron, N.Y., are proud TV and film icon Lucille Ball was born in their town. They love her. Dearly. What they don't love so much is a statue of Lucy by artist Dave Poulin that was erected in town in 2009. It's not just that the comedian looks like a demented serial killer. The face is all wrong - the eyes big and monstrous, the teeth threatening and prominent, the hair kind of masculine. Concerned citizens have spent six years trying to persuade town leaders to redo the piece or get rid of it. Celoron Mayor Scott Schrecengost tells the Post-Journal in Jamestown, N.Y., he doesn't want to waste any more taxpayer money on the statue.

USA loves 'Pretty Woman' Too many fans still are fixated on a pic she made 24 years ago, the rom-com Pretty Woman , Julia Roberts said Friday on Today . Fans come up to her by the thousands and tell her they live for that movie. "I kind of go, 'Another decade, anything?' " Roberts, 46, told Matt Lauer . Asking him to love her,' " she says, repeating lines from 1999's Notting Hill , which costarred Hugh Grant . WHEN SHOPPING for gifts this holiday season, buyers want value. One would think that's what Hollywood producers want also, but they always seem drawn by the big star and the big summer tentpole with the $200 million budget. But with so few stars consistently bankable - even Tom Cruise hasn't lured audiences lately - Forbes magazine has come out with a list of the stars who provide the best value. It isn't very helpful, however, because aside from the woman at the top of list, Natalie Portman , the others are young actors in huge, blockbuster franchises.
