MANCHESTER, England - Tens of thousands of Manchester United fans lined the streets on Monday to celebrate their team's 20th English league title and catch another glimpse of manager Alex Ferguson before he retires. Jubilant United players were spending a second day with the Premier League trophy after lifting it Sunday following the 2-1 win over Swansea - Ferguson's final game at Old Trafford after nearly 27 years in charge. A custom-designed, open-top bus bearing a "Champions 2013" logo set off from the stadium under overcast skies and wound its way through the packed streets in a parade that will last more than an hour before arriving at Albert Square in the center of the city.

Los Angeles Angels outfielder Mike Trout , the reigning AL rookie of the year and MVP runner-up, will skip the World Baseball Classic to focus on spring training, his agent told the Los Angeles Times on Sunday. Last spring, the Millville native battled an illness that caused him to lose 20 pounds and he had to start the season in triple A. Albert Pujols of the Angels plans to play for the Dominican Republic at the WBC if his surgically repaired knee is healthy, his agent told MLB.com.

Skier Lindsey Vonn , 28, the four-time overall women's World Cup champion, had her request to compete in a men's World Cup downhill race on Nov. 24 in Canada rejected by the International Ski Federation on Saturday. The 17-member federation council met in Oberhofen, Switzerland, and without a vote "confirmed that one gender is not entitled to participate in races of the other," by general agreement, adding in a statement that "exceptions will not be made" to the rules. In figure skating, Mao Asada of Japan rallied to win the Cup of China in Shanghai.

A month after his groundbreaking Olympic debut, South Africa's Oscar Pistorius was reeling from a stunning upset Sunday in the London Paralympics. Pistorius had never been beaten over 200 meters until Brazilian sprinter Alan Oliveira finished in 21.45 seconds to beat the Paralympics icon by 0.07 seconds. Pistorius, who won a legal battle to wear carbon-fiber blades in competing with able-bodied rivals, later suggested that Oliveira ran with longer prosthetics than should be allowed. "He's never run a 21-second race, and I don't think he's a 21-second athlete," Pistorius said.

LONDON - Liverpool was the big casualty on the Premier League's opening day, losing by 3-0 at West Bromwich Albion on Saturday, while Arsenal began life without Robin van Persie with a frustrating, 0-0 draw against Sunderland. Goals weren't a problem for Fulham and Swansea, with both teams enjoying 5-0 routs, while former Chelsea manager Andre Villas-Boas made a miserable return to English football as Tottenham lost, 2-1, at Newcastle. But there were happier returns to the Premier League for West Ham and Reading, with both teams avoiding defeat in their first matches since gaining promotion.

The Grand Slam count for Rafael Nadal will remain at 11 for now, sidetracked by another knee problem. The third-ranked Spaniard withdrew from the U.S. Open on Wednesday. Tendinitis has kept him out of action since late June. The 26-year-old's Grand Slam titles include a record seven on the red clay of the French Open - including this year's tournament - yet his hard-charging, hard-hitting style of play takes a toll on his body. After his win at Roland Garros, he was upset by 100th-ranked Lukas Rosol in the second round at Wimbledon on June 28. He hasn't played since.
