STUART Caesar's rant about justifying torture is absurd. I'm sure all those who admitted to witchcraft while being drowned and stretched over a table during the Spanish Inquisition and Salem witch trials really were witches and warlocks. Any human will confess to anything or disclose whatever under extreme duress. I'm almost 100 percent positive that if I applied electric shock to Stuart Caesar long enough, he'd confess to having an affair with Sasquatch. Niko Chan, Philadelphia

Rosie O'Donnell has played Atlantic City many times, but it will be a special experience when she appears tonight and Saturday at Merv Griffin's Resorts. This will be her first stint as a headliner at the Jersey Shore. A triumphant return? "I certainly hope so," O'Donnell said Wednesday from her Los Angeles home. With the possible exception of a comment or two from the presidential debates, Rosie O'Donnell uttered the most-used sound bite of 1992. In A League of Their Own, she recited to Madonna the hall-of-fame line, "You think there's a man in this country who ain't seen your bosoms?" The petulant New Yawk delivery alone almost made O'Donnell a star. In case O'Donnell is still etched in your mind as primarily a stand-up comic, consider that since League she's suddenly become one of the busiest actresses in the movies.

Rosie O'Donnell is sitting in Joe Allen's restaurant on West 46th Street, working away at a daily appointment book stuffed with bits of paper, business cards and clippings. "Bet you never thought I was that well organized, did you?" she asks. O'Donnell needs an appointment book. Even though today she's sitting pretty - and quietly in her seat - she seems to be everywhere at once. She's starring in the revival of Grease that opened May 11 at the Eugene O'Neill Theatre, and Exit to Eden, a comedy with Dan Aykroyd, will be out this summer.

GROWING UP, the odds that I would have been picked to wear a sash as Miss Anything were slimmer than Rosie O'Donnell winning Miss (or Mr.) Congeniality. Overweight, myopic and blessed with hair that in its natural state looked like one of those designs you used to draw on a Spirograph, I was hardly Bert Parks material. Thus, you would be justified in believing that anything negative I have to say about the reigning Miss America will likely come off as sour grapes, fermented and poured into a red plastic cup. But bear with me. Other than the fact that she is a native of New York, I really had nothing against the newly crowned beauty queen, even though she had the most bizarre idea of "talent" since Pia Zadora actually got an agent.

Rosie: Truth to power It's just days before her return to The View , but Rosie O'Donnell already is spilling a few embarrassing insider tidbits. Rosie, 52, tells Variety that the show's casting process was miserable. "It was very much like the Hunger Games , how they did it," says Rosie, who was signed in July. Come August and producers still needed to fill two slots, so they asked candidates (at gunpoint?) to conduct mock debates with Rosie and cohost Whoopi Goldberg . "I think Whoopi and I were both a little shocked at having to do a chemistry test," Rosie says.

WE PLANNED on wittily referring to a whole world of Hollywood happenings from this past week in this space - what's old is new again on "The View," pop singers get probation, that kind of thing - but then LeBron James uttered "I'm coming home" to Sports Illustrated midday yesterday and the Earth stopped spinning. Friday Hollywood star George Clooney refuses to accept an apology by the Daily Mail , who had published a piece claiming the actor's future mother-in-law opposed his upcoming nuptials.
