DAYTON, Ohio - While La Salle's roster has a distinct Philadelphia flavor, Boise State has looked far beyond its Idaho roots to build a program. When the Explorers and Broncos meet Wednesday night in the NCAA first-round game at Dayton, they will have taken considerably different paths to recruit their players. La Salle's roster has four players from Philadelphia, while Boise State is a team that the United Nations could admire. Leading scorer Anthony Drmic is from Australia, one of two players with down-under roots.

KISSIMMEE, Fla. - Charlie Manuel has been adamant all spring about his desire to have 23-year-old infielder Freddy Galvis on his roster. While the Phillies have some concerns about getting the switch-hitting defensive star enough work at the plate to continue his development, their manager is convinced of two things: 1) He can get Galvis 250 at-bats over the course of the season; 2) 250 at-bats at the major league level would be more beneficial to Galvis than 450 at-bats in the minors.

CLEARWATER, Fla. - We made our first attempt at projecting the Phillies' 25-man Opening Day roster a little more than 2 weeks ago. The most significant development that has occurred since then is the lack of significant developments, specifically with regard to injury. Last year at this time, Ryan Howard, Chase Utley and Jose Contreras were headed toward season-opening disabled-list spots. In 2011, the health of Utley and Brad Lidge dominated the news cycle. This year, spring training has been light on the kind of drama that can diminish a team's chances before the season even starts.

With just hours to go before Major League Soccer's roster compliance deadline, the Union made two significant moves. Forward Chandler Hoffman, the team's first-round draft pick in 2012, is headed to the Los Angeles Galaxy in exchange for a conditional SuperDraft pick in 2014. Later Friday, the Union released third-string goalkeeper Chase Harrison. The team opens its season Saturday as it hosts Sporting Kansas City at PPL Park. "Chandler and I had an honest conversation about where he stood and we decided that this trade gives him an opportunity that he would not have had within our team this season," Union manager John Hackworth said in a statement issued by the team.

It appears this much is clear when it comes to the 76ers: The new ownership, led by Josh Harris, is willing to do pretty much anything it can to make this organization relevant again. It proved as much when, after the team tickled the fans' fancy with a two-round playoff run last season, the front office blew up the roster and landed a prized possession in Andrew Bynum. The claim was that the move was done because the roster that took them to a Game 7 against the Boston Celtics in the Eastern Conference semifinals had maxed out. It was a gutsy move, but one that proved to the city that the owners were all in - that winning now was the goal and that taking risks wasn't going to be something that restrained their decision-making.

The Eagles announced Chip Kelly's coaching staff Friday, all at once, as they'd said they would do. Twenty-one names are on the list, including that of Shaun Huls, the "sports science coordinator," which sounds a little BALCOesque, but Huls' bio says he comes to the Eagles from a position as strength and conditioning and combatives coordinator for Navy Special Warfare. So, if hand-to-hand fighting breaks out in the middle of the third quarter, the Eagles presumably will be covered. Five members of the new staff are following Kelly from the University of Oregon.
