JERSEY CITY, N.J. - It's become the stuff of legend, how close the Eagles were to drafting Russell Wilson. A year ago that miss looked like a fatal mistake. Now, not so much, even though the second-year quarterback will be playing against the Broncos in Super Bowl XLVIII. The Eagles have Nick Foles, after all, and the argument could be made that he had a better 2013 regular season. But the two quarterbacks, both selected in the third round of the 2012 draft, will always be linked.

BEAU ALLEN was a rising sophomore at Wisconsin when Russell Wilson arrived. The circumstances were unusual. Wilson, a football and baseball star at North Carolina State, had gotten his degree the previous spring, then had quarterbacked the Wolfpack in 2010 while attending grad school. When the season ended, Wilson told NC State coach Tom O'Brien he intended to go to spring training with the Colorado Rockies (who had drafted him in the fourth round the year before) instead of reporting for spring football.

LANDOVER, Md. - Call it another case of "East Coast Bias," but a lot of people not living in the Pacific Northwest might not know just how good a rookie season Seattle quarterback Russell Wilson has had. Everyone has heard of Colts rookie quarterback Andrew Luck, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2012 draft who moved Peyton Manning out of town. And everyone knows Washington rookie quarterback Robert Griffin III, the Heisman Trophy winner for whom the Redskins ransomed the farm to move up to No. 2 overall.

PHOENIX - Russell Wilson has studied Derek Jeter, Michael Jordan, and Tom Brady. The Seattle Seahawks quarterback has tried to learn what it takes to have the "clutch" quality, an intangible characteristic that is often attributed to a sport's best winners. "I just love trying to play like that," Wilson said. "I love trying to visualize being successful. " Before every game, Wilson finds a spot in the stadium that brings him "back down to zero. " He gazes at it during the game to relax and focus on the moment.

Wondering whether to start Marshawn Lynch and A.J. Green, or to bench Chad Henne and Ryan Broyles? Here are my picks to roll, and get rolled, in Week 8 of the 2013 season. Watch 'em roll Russell Wilson, QB, Seahawks at Rams. He's been up-and-down over the last five weeks, but Wilson will be on his 'A' game under the Monday-night lights. He may even get to take his favorite new toy out for a spin, as Percy Harvin prepares for his Seattle debut. Regardless, the Rams are likely to be in such offensive disarray Wilson should prosper simply from outstanding field position.

GLENDALE, Ariz. - Within seconds after Malcolm Butler intercepted Russell Wilson with 20 seconds left in Super Bowl XLIX, many were calling the Seahawks' decision to throw on second and goal at the 1-yard line, rather than running the ball, the worst play call in NFL history. That's a lot of football to cover, but one thing is for certain: With the NFL's popularity at an all-time high - as evidenced by Sunday night's game being the most viewed Super Bowl ever - Seattle's decision to pass rather than handoff to bulldozing running back Marshawn Lynch will be the most discussed play call ever.

COLUMBUS, Ohio - Braxton Miller threw a 40-yard touchdown pass to Devin Smith with 20 seconds left to give Ohio State a 33-29 victory over No. 12 Wisconsin on Saturday night. It was almost exactly seven days earlier that the Badgers were beaten 37-31 at Michigan State on a miracle pass on the final play of the game. The latest heartbreak, just like that one, wasn't confirmed until it passed a video review. The Buckeyes (5-3, 2-2 Big Ten) won their biggest game of a season shadowed by NCAA problems.

THREE MORE football players are in hot water at Ohio State. The school reported late yesterday afternoon that running back Jordan Hall, defensive back Corey Brown (Cardinal O'Hara) and defensive back Travis Howard each received impermissible benefits of $300 or less earlier this year - after several players were suspended for accepting cash and free tattoos from the subject of a federal drug-trafficking probe. Ohio State is awaiting final word on what sanctions it will receive from the NCAA for violations which occurred in 2010 that led to coach Jim Tressel's forced resignation in May.   Noteworthy *  Starting defensive end Ronnell Lewis, whose eligibility had been in question, has been cleared to play for top-ranked Oklahoma this season.

DREXEL SENIOR Damion Lee will graduate in a few months, which, in today's college basketball world, essentially makes him a free agent. Lee, who took a medical redshirt in 2013-14 after tearing an ACL in Drexel's fifth game and has 1 year of eligibility remaining, told coach Bruiser Flint over the weekend that he plans to play his final season at another school. "What are you going to do?" Flint said. "That's what he said he wants to do, so that's what he's doing. " It is essentially what Temple's Anthony Lee did last year.

Nationals ace Stephen Strasburg, who has been supplanted by 2013 AL Cy Young Award winner Max Scherzer as Washington's opening-day starter, is now looking at starting Game 3. That would be April 9, in a likely showdown with Mets ace Matt Harvey, who was bypassed as his team's opening-day starter in favor of Bartolo Colon. Scherzer will be followed in the Nats rotation by Jordan Zimmerman, Strasburg, Gio Gonzalez, and Doug Fister. More Game 1 starters Padres newcomer James Shields has been picked to start on opening day, manager Bud Black announced Saturday.

FOR ONE SEAHAWKS fan, Pete Carroll's call that led to Russell Wilson throwing an interception in the end zone with 20 seconds left in Super Bowl 49 was a matter of life and death. At least that's what the obituary of 53-year-old Mike Vedvik said. The obit, which appeared in the Spokesman-Review newspaper in Spokane, Wash., was written in part by one of Mike's sisters. It gave all the obligatory "survived by" information before revealing an unusual cause of death. "We blame the Seahawks lousy play call for Mike's untimely demise," it read.

GLENDALE, Ariz. - Love them or loathe them, the rowdy Seahawks will have first dibs on the NFC title for the foreseeable future. Yes, the Seahawks who started a fight during New England's victory formation at the end of the Super Bowl. Yes, the Seahawks who took two penalties at the game's end, and led the league in penalties this season. Yes, the disrespectful, disrespected Seahawks, whose bunker mentality and persecution complex make them a dangerous cell of football fanatics.

Check out more Super Bowl prop bets from the Daily News' Mike Kern here. COLLEAGUE Mike Kern stumbled on an interesting - and very appropriate - stat. There have been 48 Super Bowls. The opening coin toss has landed on heads 24 times and tails 24 times. That's quite symbolic for those who try to make money picking this game. Tom Brady's offense vs. that red-hot Seahawks defense. Heads or tails. So, with that, prop bets with fake money. * I'm taking the Seahawks in another part of this paper, so my first move is to lay the $110 to win $100 that they will score first.

THE NFL conference championship games were a tale of two contests. The Seahawks came back from the dead for a 28-22 overtime win over the Packers on a walkoff touchdown catch by Jermaine Kearse. The Patriots were able to book their trip to Arizona for the Super Bowl before the third quarter was over in their game against the Colts, blowing out Indy, 45-7. Before the Seahawks and Pats take the field in Super Bowl XLIX, take a look at 20 factoids about these two super teams: 1 Russell Wilson is 10-0 in his career, including playoff games, against Super Bowl-winning quarterbacks.
