Center Brayden Schenn was disappointed to start the season in the AHL but figured it was a matter of time before he was promoted to the Flyers. On Wednesday, his time arrived. Schenn, the Flyers' most heralded prospect, was recalled from the Adirondack Phantoms, and he is expected to be in the lineup Thursday night against visiting Washington. In four games with the Phantoms, Schenn had four goals and four assists. "I'm going to try to do the same thing in the NHL level," Schenn, 20, said in a conference call with reporters.

TORONTO - The Flyers have gone from road warriors to roadkill. They scored in the opening minute Monday night, lost their momentum with a series of senseless penalties, and watched Toronto score three goals early in the second period en route to a 5-2 victory at the Air Canada Centre. Inexplicably, the Flyers are 1-6 on the road. A year ago, no NHL team had more road wins than the Flyers. "They were hungrier, and when that happens you're usually first to the puck," defenseman Kimmo Timonen said of the Maple Leafs.

Twelve nights after they routed the Panthers in Florida, the Flyers had to huff and puff to try to get a victory in a rematch Thursday night at the Wells Fargo Center. Didn't happen. Florida jolted the Flyers in a shootout, 3-2, and ended the home team's two-game winning streak. In the shootout, Jonathan Huberdeau and Peter Mueller easily beat goalie Ilya Bryzgalov. Down at the other end, Florida goalie Jose Theodore stopped Matt Read and Claude Giroux, making the Flyers 23-42 all-time in shootouts.

Claude Giroux and Steven Stamkos, arguably the NHL's top active players, will square off when the Flyers play Tampa Bay on Tuesday night at the St. Pete Times Forum. Giroux, the Flyers' shifty center, leads the NHL with 41 points, while Stamkos is tied for second in the league with 20 goals. The Flyers are resuming a five-game road trip, one in which they are 1-1-1 - a 2-1 shootout loss in Colorado, a 4-1 win in Dallas, and a 4-2 defeat in New York to the Rangers. Overall, the Flyers have an NHL-best 28 points (13-4-2)

Playing with more physicality than at any time during the young season, the Flyers overcame a depleted lineup - and recent history - as they jolted the New York Rangers, 2-1, in front of a raucous sellout crowd at the Wells Fargo Center on Thursday night. With the win, the Flyers (1-3) avoided the first 0-4 start in franchise history. They also ended an eight-game losing streak against the Rangers, who had outscored the Flyers, 34-13, during that span. "We can take this one and keep building," forward Max Talbot said.

It was an unofficial practice because the NHL's new collective bargaining agreement still has to be signed, but the Flyers who skated in Voorhees on Monday seemed to have some extra zip during the one-hour session. It had everything to do with the tentative agreement that was forged between the league and the players' union on Sunday, ending the 113-day lockout. "It's been a long four months," said defensemen Kimmo Timonen, one of five Flyers who practiced Monday. "You kind of have to try to be in shape just in case this happens.

For the Flyers to get back into the playoff hunt, they must do some extraordinary things, such as going on a lengthy winning streak. The Flyers won their third straight game for the first time this season with a 5-3 comeback victory over the Montreal Canadiens on Wednesday night at the Wells Fargo Center. The Flyers came through in the third period, outscoring Montreal, 3-0, and outshooting the Canadiens, 14-2. "We are winning battles, making better decisions with the puck, and we're having more fun playing that third period," said captain Claude Giroux, who assisted on Erik Gustafsson's winning goal.

ST. PAUL, Minn. - Ryan Nugent-Hopkins was picked first in a center-heavy NHL draft by the Edmonton Oilers last night. The Oilers, going first overall for the second straight year, selected the slick passer from the Red Deer Rebels of the Western Hockey League. The 18-year-old center led the WHL last season with 75 assists. Nugent-Hopkins is the first WHL player to be drafted first since 1996. Six of the first eight picks were centers. Left wing Gabriel Landeskog of Sweden went second to the Colorado Avalanche.

The NHL, despite a record $3.3 billion in revenue last season, locked out its players at midnight Saturday. This lockout follows the one in 2004-05, when the season was canceled, and would be the third since Gary Bettman was named the commissioner in 1993. "Nobody wants to make a deal and play hockey more than I do," Bettman said during a news conference Thursday in New York. "This is what I do. This is what my life is about in terms of how I spend most of my waking hours. This is really hard.

The Flyers spent a brief but welcome spell at home before continuing to the third game of their six-game trip, Friday in New Jersey against the Devils. The Flyers lost, 5-2, in Toronto on Monday and beat the Jets, 3-2, on Tuesday in Winnipeg. They returned home after the win, practiced Thursday at the Skate Zone in Voorhees, then headed to Newark. Defenseman Andrej Meszaros, who has been sidelined since Jan. 24 with a shoulder injury, returned to practice. He was wearing a noncontact yellow jersey and skated in the beginning.
