The Tennessee Lady Vols do not like being embarrassed or being denied championships. Now they have yet another Southeastern Conference tournament title at the expense of the team that handed them their worst league loss since 1985. Candace Parker hit a jumper with 1 minute, 57 seconds left last night that put host Tennessee ahead to stay, and the No. 3 Lady Vols won their record 13th SEC title and third in 4 years by beating No. 7 LSU, 61-55, Nashville, Tenn. The last three titles all have come against LSU, but this win is a little sweeter for Tennessee after the Lady Tigers won the SEC regular-season crown by defeating host Tennessee, 78-62, on Feb. 14. Tennessee (30-2)

Jarvis Landry made a spectacular one-handed touchdown catch and No. 8 LSU kept its BCS hopes alive with a 20-13 win over host Arkansas (4-8, 2-6 Southeastern Conference) in Fayetteville on Friday. The Tigers (10-2, 6-2) must hope for an Alabama loss to Auburn and a Texas A&M victory on Saturday to reach next weekend's SEC championship game. Even without a division crown, the Tigers could still get an at-large bid to the BCS. Nebraska 13, Iowa 7 - Rex Burkhead scored the go-ahead touchdown in his return from a knee injury and the No. 17 Cornhuskers (10-2, 7-1 Big Ten)

A corporation separate from the NCAA and BCS commissioners would run the national championship football playoffs under a plan proposed by University of Florida president Bernie Machen, according to the Scripps Howard News Service. Machen will know if he has the support of his Southeastern Conference colleagues by the end of this week when the SEC business meetings conclude. The meetings started yesterday in Destin, Fla. Machen has been talking about a playoff since December, when he feared the Gators might be shut out of the national championship game using the current Bowl Championship Series system.

Only in the BCS standings does Oregon get passed. Kansas State moved ahead of the Ducks and up to No. 3 on Sunday behind SEC rivals Alabama and Florida. The Wildcats' big victory Saturday at West Virginia was enough to nudge them past the Ducks, who are No. 2 in both polls but are getting held back by computer ratings that lag behind the other highly ranked teams. The Crimson Tide (.9625) are still solidly in first, and Florida (.9310) grabbed a firmer grip on second with a 44-11 victory over South Carolina on Saturday.

If you thought there were stylistic differences in the Bush and Gore campaigns, wait until you check out Saturday's matchup of No. 5 Florida and No. 21 South Carolina. The winner will be the East representative in the Southeastern Conference championship game. The Gators (8-1) - who average 41.3 points per game and are seeking a berth in the SEC title contest for the seventh time in the event's nine-year existence - somehow represent both wide-open offense and stodgy tradition.

WHEN KENTUCKY beat Kansas, 72-40, on Nov. 18, the whispers began. When the Wildcats had UCLA down 41-7 at the half on Dec. 20, the talk became louder. By the time they hit 20-0, the countdown began. Could a group of "veterans" who played for the 2014 national championship combine with another great recruiting class and win them all, go 40-0, become the first unbeaten national champions since 1976? After blasting Arkansas, 78-63, yesterday to win the SEC championship, that whisper has become a shout, 34-0, just six more wins from perfection.

AFTER TODAY'S games, the College Football Playoff Selection Committee will make its first rankings, and, on Tuesday night, we fans will get our first inkling at what the four-team playoff system might look like. This is an improvement over the BCS, which chose two teams to play for the national championship, but it simply isn't fair and won't solve the controversy. Let's assume the college football season plays out as like this . . . * Florida State runs the table and wins the ACC playoff and finishes 13-0.

ATLANTA - Alabama is heading back to the national championship game - by a mere 5 yards. AJ McCarron threw a 45-yard touchdown pass to Amari Cooper with 3 minutes, 15 seconds remaining, and the No. 2 Crimson Tide barely held off No. 3 Georgia, 32-28, in a Southeastern Conference title game for the ages Saturday. After an apparent game-clinching interception by Alabama was overturned on a video review, Georgia's Aaron Murray completed a 15-yard pass to Arthur Lynch, a 23-yarder to Tavarres King, and a 26-yarder to Lynch, who was hauled down at the Alabama 8 as the clock continued to run. The Bulldogs were out of timeouts.

Gene Chizik led Auburn to perhaps the greatest season in the program's history, and two years later to maybe its worst. The rapid fall from a national championship to 3-9 and the Southeastern Conference doormat led to Chizik's firing Sunday, the day after a humbling, 49-0 loss to No. 2 Alabama that showed just how far the program has slipped. The Tigers went from 14-0 with a perfect SEC record with Cam Newton leading the offense in 2010 to 3-9 and 0-8, losing their final three league games by a combined 150-21.

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - AJ McCarron and Alabama came up just short with the game, and probably their national title hopes, on the line Saturday. The top-ranked Crimson Tide rallied from a three-touchdown deficit and nearly took the lead before leaving Bryant-Denny Stadium with a 29-24 loss to Johnny Manziel and No. 15 Texas A&M. Alabama (9-1, 6-1 Southeastern Conference) is down, but coach Nick Saban isn't counting his team out of the national championship race just yet. "Two of the three national championship teams that I coached lost a game," Saban said, counting one at Louisiana State.
