By Don Harrison There's no reason to believe that sexual abuse, pedophilic or otherwise, is increasing. It's only that we're more willing to talk about it. The Penn State scandal seems to have unleashed a tsunami of revelations. "Funny uncles" are being outed everywhere, sometimes for atrocities committed long ago. The accusations against former Daily News sports columnist Bill Conlin, for example, go back 40 years. The shame and guilt felt by victims kept child molestation secret more often in the past.

AT BRYANT ELEMENTARY, the West Philadelphia school still reeling after three fourth-graders were arrested Monday for allegedly sexually assaulting another student, a group of parents gathered last night and resolved to do what it takes to make sure their children are safe. "The ones who don't want to get involved, I'll fight for your kid," Janice Hamilton, whose son is in the same class as the boys who were arrested, told the group, to a small round of applause. Principal Jala Pearson implored the group of roughly 20 parents to volunteer to help monitor recess, the lunchroom, the front door and the school yard on school days.

THREE fourth-graders were arrested Monday for allegedly sexually assaulting a younger classmate in a restroom at a West Philadelphia school last month, police said. An 8-year-old student at Bryant Elementary told his mother on Nov. 5 that the three boys attacked him on Oct. 24, when he entered the restroom, said Capt. John Darby of the Special-Victims Unit. The three accused boys - two of them 10 years old and the other 11 - were already in the restroom. They allegedly grabbed the boy, pulled down his pants and made "sexual contact" that went beyond mere bullying, Darby said.

THE WIFE of fired Syracuse assistant coach Bernie Fine will make a statement today challenging the implications of a tape recording of a 2002 telephone conversation with her husband's accuser that appears to show she knew of alleged sexual abuse of boys, her nephew said yesterday. "She'll even say that's her voice," nephew Matt Govendo said, but she will allege that sections of the tape "are all tampered with. " Fine's initial accuser, former Syracuse ball boy Bobby Davis, 39, denied that the tape had been altered.

BOB COSTAS asked, "Are you a pedophile?" Jerry Sandusky answered, "No. " And the nightmare continues. The absolute worst thing that could come out of this entire, awful situation would be a trial - but there Sandusky was, on national television, proclaiming his innocence on 40 different counts related to child sex abuse involving eight different boys and several eyewitnesses. Forget the Penn State football program, or the university itself - both of which have been rocked to their foundations by their failure to notify police of an alleged monster who was their former assistant coach.
