Mike Buxbaum took the final step in his last high school tennis match. One year after falling in the state final, the North Penn senior won the PIAA Class AAA singles championship in boys' tennis Saturday at the Hershey Racquet Club. Buxbaum defeated Pittsburgh Central Catholic's Adam Blasinsky, 6-0, 6-4. The West Chester Rustin doubles duo of seniors John Lim and Derek Sommers also won state gold in Class AAA, defeating Alok Nimgaonkar and Chris Grubbs of Shady Side Academy, 0-6, 6-2, 6-4. Buxbaum and Lim and Sommers had reached the finals with semifinal wins earlier Saturday - Buxbaum topping Peter Hazlett of Mount Lebanon, 6-1, 6-2, and the Rustin pair outlasting Fox Chapel's Sid Rajupet and Ben Short, 6-4, 3-6, 7-6 (11)

The Conestoga boys' tennis team won its third consecutive PIAA Class AAA state championship Saturday in the team tournament at the Hershey Racquet Club. Conestoga defeated Shady Side Academy in the title game for the second straight year, this time by 4-1. Conestoga's seniors will end their careers with impressive resumés. In four years, the Pioneers have won three state titles, three Central League championships, and three District 1 titles. "It has been an unbelievable four years for these seniors," Pioneers cocoach Blake Stabert said.

Both remaining entries from District 1 in the PIAA state girls' tennis championships were eliminated in the semifinals Saturday at Hershey Racquet Club. Meredith Lee, the sophomore from Owen J. Roberts who made a run as the district's third seed, fell to Ananya Dua of Shady Side Academy, 6-3, 6-4. Villa Maria put the finishing touches on the girls' team championship by winning the final event, the 400-yard freestyle relay, at the PIAA Class AA state swimming championships on Saturday at Bucknell University. Molly O'Brien, Lauren Law, Julie Dobson and Sarah Hitchens registered a meet-record time of 3 minutes, 36.39 seconds, eclipsing the 15-year old mark of 3:36.99. The Hurricanes, who won the 200 freestyle relay on Friday, also got third places from Hitchens in the 100 backstroke and by Olivia Tierney in the 100 breaststroke.

Villa Maria's swim team got one for the thumb on Thursday. The Hurricanes dominated the PIAA Class AA girls' swimming and diving championships, capturing their fifth consecutive title with 267 points at Bucknell University. Villa Maria's 400-yard freestyle relay team (Olivia Giampietro, Julie Dobson, Emily Cornell, Maura McManus) finished first in 3 minutes, 28.99 seconds, less than a second in front of Gwynedd Mercy (3:29.70). Gwynedd Mercy finished second overall with 155 points, thanks in part to Allie Szekely's victory in the 100 backstroke (54.02)

District 1 singles champion Kellie Murphy breezed into the quarterfinals of the PIAA state girls' tennis championships yesterday at Hershey Racquet Club. The Penncrest senior lost only three games in two matches. Last year's third-place finisher, who is seeded second this year, whipped Selinsgrove's Carrie Bruno, 6-2, 6-0, then beat Leah Rubin of Wyoming Valley, 6-1, 6-0, to reach the quarterfinals. Abington's Rachel Cohen was not so fortunate, as the tourney's fourth seed was upset in the second round by Tracy Hollinger of Manheim in three sets.

Meredith Lee of Owen J. Roberts carried the banner for District 1 singles players at the PIAA state tennis championships Friday at the Hershey Racquet Club. Lee, the third seed from District 1, won two matches to advance to the semifinals of the Class AAA tournament. Conestoga's doubles team of Kaylee Yan and Amy Zhang is the only other local entry in the Class AAA semifinals. Lee dropped just two games in her two matches. She beat Katina Jones of Penn Manor, 6-1, 6-0, in the first round and took down State College's Yvonne Peters, 6-1, 6-0, in the quarterfinals.

District 1's singles championship hopes fell short Saturday in the PIAA state boys' tennis championships at the Hershey Racquet Club. In Class AA, Lower Moreland's Drew Hoffmann had to withdraw before the start of the championship match against District 5 champ Peter Riley of Tussey Mountain. Riley was awarded the title on a walkover. "It was an illness," Lower Moreland coach Jeanette Hausman said. "They said it might have been kind of an electrolyte problem. We're waiting for him to get out of the hospital [Hershey Medical Center]
