PITTSBURGH - The Steelers escaped with a victory. The health of their franchise quarterback is another matter entirely. The Steelers edged the woeful Kansas City Chiefs 16-13 in overtime on Monday night but lost Ben Roethlisberger for most of the second half - and perhaps a lot longer - with a right shoulder injury. Roethlisberger left the game early in the third quarter after getting slammed to the turf by Kansas City linebackers Tamba Hali and Justin Houston and did not return.

INDIANAPOLIS - Shaun Suisham kicked a 38-yard field goal with four seconds left Sunday night, lifting the Pittsburgh Steelers to a 23-20 victory at Indianapolis. It was a wild game that turned three times in the final 51/2 minutes and was far closer than most expected. The Steelers (2-1) struggled as Ben Roethlisberger lost two fumbles and threw an interception in one 11-minute first-half span. But the Colts (0-3) proved hard to shake off. Joseph Addai's 6-yard run capped an 80-yard drive for a 20-20 tie with 2 minutes, 9 seconds to go. Roethlisberger then came back with a 60-yard march to set up the winning score.

The Washington Redskins proved that the two-game winning streak they brought into their game against Dallas was not just a byproduct of playing bad teams. After their 26-24 victory over the Cowboys at Texas Stadium yesterday, they can be considered as legitimate contenders, and that means the NFC East - already the best division in the NFL - is now a four-way race. Jason Campbell threw two touchdown passes and Clinton Portis ran for 121 yards as the Redskins (3-1) knocked the Cowboys (3-1)

PITTSBURGH - Torrey Smith wasn't going to let the game-winning touchdown slip through his hands twice. Five plays after a sure scoring strike tipped off his fingers, the Baltimore rookie receiver held onto a 26-yard touchdown pass from Joe Flacco with 8 seconds remaining to lift the Ravens past the Pittsburgh Steelers, 23-20, last night. Smith capped Baltimore's game-winning, 92-yard drive by beating William Gay down the right sideline as the Ravens (6-2) snapped Pittsburgh's four-game winning streak.

BALTIMORE - Because there's still some life in the 37-year-old arm of Charlie Batch, the Pittsburgh Steelers remain alive in the AFC North. Batch directed a 61-yard drive in the closing minutes and Shaun Suisham kicked a 42-yard field goal as time expired to give the Steelers a 23-20 victory over the Baltimore Ravens on Sunday. Playing without injured Ben Roethlisberger for a third straight week, the Steelers turned to Batch for the second game in a row. The 15-year veteran went 25-for-36 for 276 yards, threw a touchdown and rallied the Steelers in a must-win game against their hated division rivals.

Running back Clinton Portis is targeting Washington's second game for his return from a shoulder injury. He essentially ruled himself out for the Monday night opener against the Minnesota Vikings. Though he wore a helmet and his No. 26 jersey during the entire practice yesterday for the first time since partially dislocating his left shoulder 4 weeks ago, Portis said he is focusing on coming back against Dallas or Houston, Washington's third game. "The way things look, bro, you'll probably be seeing 2-6 against Dallas," Portis said.

Former Super Bowl star Plaxico Burress wants to get a break from prison, but prosecutors said yesterday they will likely try to block his bid for work release because he hasn't served enough time. The former New York Giant applied for a work furlough - which would let him spend some portion of his time at home - on Nov. 25, about 2 months into his 2-year sentence for carrying an unlicensed gun that went off and wounded him at a Manhattan nightclub. State prison system officials are expected to decide on his request next month.

The NFL is reportedly looking into the actions of Pittsburgh coach Mike Tomlin, who appeared to impede the progress of Baltimore kick returner Jacoby Jones during the Ravens' 22-20 win over the Steelers on Thanksgiving night. After the Steelers had scored in the third quarter to make it 13-7, Jones fielded the kickoff at his own goal-line and took off on what looked like a sure touchdown, running past every Steeler on the field. Every Steeler player , that is. Tomlin was standing on the white stripe that borders the field, facing away from the play, as Jones sped up the sideline.

PITTSBURGH - For the fourth time in 5 weeks, it came down to Juan Castillo's defense. The Eagles had preserved close victories over the Browns, Ravens and Giants with valiant, late-fourth-quarter stands. And there they were again Sunday, confident they could do the same against Ben Roethlisberger and the Steelers. "As a defense, that's exactly what you want," safety Kurt Coleman said. "To be able to close up a game. " "Every game's been a fight this year," cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha said.

Before we get to all the second-guessing and negativity, let's stop for a moment to reflect on the emotional stakes percolating through America's flightiest sports town around noon yesterday. The Phillies were sitting on a knife's edge in Bratwurst Heaven. They could win the NL division series or face the threat of a humiliating collapse for, oh, the 99th time in their history. The Eagles were on the same narrow peak above a slippery slope. A win at home against the Washington Redskins would keep them in the NFC East race.
