DEFENSIVE BACK Kent Richardson tied a team-record for most interceptions in a game as he pulled in three passes to give the Soul a 61-55 win Saturday over the San Jose Sabercats. "Those three interceptions, that was the difference in the game," said Soul coach Doug Plank. The game got off to a slow start, and the Sabercats put the first points on the board, with Mark Grieb throwing a 7-yard touchdown pass to James Roe with less than 5 minutes left in the first quarter. THE SOUL clinched the East Division title and will host a playoff game after its 66-57 win at Cleveland on Saturday. Soul quarterback Dan Raudabaugh completed 25 of 28 passes for 285 yards and six touchdowns, and no interceptions. "This was a collective effort from top to bottom," Soul coach Clint Dolezel said. "Dan had an outstanding game, but there were many guys that stepped up when we had injuries during the game. Collectively, we stayed focused and played a complete game.

John Kaleo scored on a 1-yard run with 40 seconds left and teamed with David Saunders on a two-point conversion to give the Columbus Destroyers a 46-45 victory over the Soul last night in an Arena Football League matchup at the Wachovia Center. The Soul (7-6) had a chance to win the game, but Todd France missed a 42-yard field goal on the final play. T HE SOUL got another strong effort by the defense and routed Iowa, 54-30, Saturday night at the Wells Fargo Center. Philadelphia has won three in a row for the first time this season and improved to 8-5. "We're getting into a groove as a team and our performance is starting to show that," said Soul coach Clint Dolezel. Dan Raudabaugh went 12-for-15 for 142 yards and four touchdowns - two each to Tiger Jones and Ryan McDaniel. Wide receiver Larry Brackins switched over to the defense when James Romain sustained a gruesome injury.

The Soul named Connell Maynor offensive coordinator and re-signed John Kirk as fullback/linebacker and special-teams coach, the Arena Football League team announced yesterday. Contract terms were not disclosed. Maynor joined Philadelphia as a backup quarterback late last season when Tony Graziani was sidelined with a torn hamstring. The 12-year league veteran has won four championships. In his playing career, Maynor completed 727 of 1,246 passes for 9,332 yards and 160 touchdowns.

A week after setting a franchise record for futility, the Soul upset the league-leading Dallas Desperados, 55-51, in an Arena League game last night at the American Airlines Center. The Soul (5-4) had scored only 20 points on March 18 in a loss to Columbus, but they ended a four-game winning streak by the Desperados (7-2). Steve Smith, who played for the Soul last season and was reacquired in a trade with Kansas City last week, was named Ironman of the Game with eight catches for 98 yards and two touchdowns, plus three kickoff returns for 42 yards.
