It was in 1972 that I first heard the name Mike Schmidt. Paul Owens, then the Phillies' farm director, was talking about a college kid the club had signed who had a chance to become an outstanding player. "He can do it all," Owens said that spring. "He's an infielder who can run, throw, field and hit the ball out of sight. He's an all-round athlete who just has to learn to make more consistent contact, but he will. "Tony Lucadello loves him. " Lucadello was a veteran Phillies scout whom I had grown to respect over the years because so many of his "discoveries" had reached the majors.

Once again, Gene Schall's superb spring will not translate into a spot on the Phillies' Opening Day roster. The Phillies told three players yesterday they would not be with the team on April 1, leaving pitching as the only remaining uncertainty to the team's makeup. Besides Schall, a first baseman who hit .469 this spring, the team sent down third baseman Howard Battle and outfielder Glenn Murray. Thirty players remain on the major league roster, and there were strong indications infielder Kevin Sefcik and catcher Rick Wrona would be added to that list.

In March, I wanted to escape miserable winter and nudge spring along by driving south to Chincoteague and Assateague Islands. Wild ponies are the big attractions of those islands in Maryland and Virginia, but the drive south was as slow as the tardy arrival of spring. (A long, disastrous afternoon gambling at Atlantic City stranded me in New Jersey the first day; I spent too much time losing at slots.) The next day, the Cape May-Lewes Ferry proved the first indication it wouldn't be winter forever.

Macy's department store at the Cherry Hill Mall is to undergo a major expansion and remodeling, beginning next spring, a Macy's executive said last week. "It will be a total renovation of the entire store. . . . It will be an entirely new Macy's," Garry Katz, Macy's senior vice president for operations, said. Katz said work was scheduled to begin next spring and would take 2 1/2 to 3 years to be completed. The project involves a two-story 94,000-square-foot addition on the northern side of the 238,000-square-foot building, according to plans filed with the township.

The hills tell one another, and the listening Valleys hear; all our longing eyes are turn'd Up to thy bright pavilions: issue forth And let thy holy feet visit our clime! Come o'er the eastern hills, and let our winds Kiss thy perfum'd garments; let us taste Thy morn and evening breath; scatter thy pearls Upon our lovesick land that mourns for thee. O deck her forth with thy fair fingers; pour Thy soft kisses on her bosom; and put Thy golden crown upon her languish'd head, Whose modest tresses are bound up for thee.

Recalling both Casablanca and The Unbearable Lightness of Being, director Rolf Schubel's 1999 German-Hungarian affair, Gloomy Sunday, is a rich, romantic melodrama that surprised audiences when it opened in the spring. (And surprised theater owners, who had an unexpected hit on their hands.) Back for a return engagement, this beautiful 1930s-40s love story, which takes the song popularized by Billie Holiday for its title - and for a key element of its plot - is about a cafe pianist who falls for the cafe owner's lover, the cafe's waitress.

When Randy Wolf finished running early yesterday morning, he sat down behind the bullpen at Jack Russell Stadium and acknowledged both his disgust and his concern. Wolf knows that the season is fast approaching and that he wasn't even close to being on top of his game when the Cincinnati Reds torched him for six first-inning runs Wednesday. "To go out there and throw 40 pitches in the first inning, it's just embarrassing," Wolf said. The objective for Wolf is obvious: Correct the problem.

For the time being anyway, the questions about free agency and whether he likes Philadelphia have faded. And maybe not surprisingly, Lance Parrish is coasting through a spring training in which he looks more and more like the all-star catcher the Phillies thought they signed a year ago last week. A notoriously slow starter throughout his career, Parrish has been one of the most consistent Phils hitters through the exhibition schedule. He added a sacrifice fly yesterday for his fourth RBI of the spring in the Phils' 3-1 loss to Cincinnati.

Springtime means warmth, sunshine and joy. Right? In books, maybe. But in real life, the fact that spring has sprung means you'll probably have to bundle up on Monday only to search frantically for a short-sleeved shirt on Tuesday. Schizophrenic at worst, confusing at best, spring weather is a prime time for the common cold. Just when you become acclimated to warm evenings, a flannel-pajama night comes along, forcing your body to abruptly switch gears and leaving it susceptible to cold-carrying viruses.

Today's high could fall short of the forecast 86, but this could still be the warmest day till spring. As of shortly before 2 p.m., the temperature at the airport was 81 - a figure never topped from last October till April. It never even hit 70 from November through February. This week calls for highs to drop into the 70s the rest of the workweek, then into the 60s over the weekend. Rain is possible Tuesday night, likely Wednesday and Thursday, and possible again on Friday.
