Andy Reid didn't sound like a coach on his way out. Not that he's gone there. "I'll think about it," Reid said of his future, "when I want to think about it. " And following a 34-10 whipping of the Washington Redskins before a crowd that filled only three fourths of Lincoln Financial Field, Reid decided that now was not the time to think about it. But it's a question that has been asked with increasing furor since the Eagles...

Throw another Eagles season on the fire. Don't expect it to provide much warmth. For now, at least, don't expect the Eagles to provide much light, either. Owner Jeff Lurie, president Joe Banner, and general manager Howie Roseman were incommunicado after Sunday's thoroughly meaningless victory over Washington. They are expected to remain silent Monday and possibly Tuesday. Apparently, if Lurie emerges from his NovaCare Complex office Wednesday and sees his shadow, then Andy Reid will be coach for six more years.

EAGLES PRESIDENT Joe Banner was spied from a distance, zipping through the corridor outside the locker room yesterday afternoon, returning from having been treated by the training staff for a healing wrist ligament injury. As Banner strode back to his office, foiling any attempt to close a 10-yard gap between himself and several reporters, he joked back and forth over his shoulder about going on injured reserve. This clearly was not going to be an opportunity to discuss the future of Eagles coach Andy Reid or defensive coordinator Juan Castillo.

As rumors about their coaches swirled, Eagles players backed both Andy Reid and Juan Castillo on Wednesday and said they were focused on their final game. "We all love Coach Reid. Coach Reid's a great coach, great person to be around," wide receiver Jeremy Maclin said. "I've got the most respect for him, and I love playing for him. " Defensive players came to Castillo's defense. "Juan's done a great job. When you have the talent that we have on defense, it shouldn't all be placed on him, it should be placed on players," linebacker Jamar Chaney said.

It was self-evident that the Eagles would miss Jim Johnson when the innovative defensive coach died in 2009. The intervening years have made it clear just how important Johnson really was to Andy Reid's team. On the night the Eagles are to add Johnson to their Honor Roll, they have a 2-4 record largely because of a defense that has blown three fourth-quarter leads, has failed repeatedly in the fundamental tasks of tackling and covering receivers, and has been a mere speed bump in the red zone.

On Jan. 2, 2000, the Eagles hosted the St. Louis Rams at Veterans Stadium. The Rams were 13-2, the Greatest Show on Turf, and on their way to winning the Super Bowl under Dick Vermeil. The Eagles were 4-11 in Andy Reid's first season. Because of their miserable 3-13 record the year before, they had a ridiculously late bye, in Week 16. They wanted to finish strong. Rookie quarterback Donovan McNabb, who had suffered a sprained knee a couple of weeks earlier, donned a brace to make a statement that the Eagles were on the rise.

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. - Eli Manning threw two touchdown passes and linebacker Michael Boley scored on a 65-yard fumble return to lead the New York Giants to a 28-16 victory over the mistake-prone St. Louis Rams on Monday night. Manning hit Hakeem Nicks with a 3-yard TD pass and Domenik Hixon made a spectacular juggling grab on a 22-yard score as New York (1-1) gave Tom Coughlin a win over Steve Spagnuolo in their first matchup since the one-time Giants defensive coordinator left to take over as coach of the Rams (0-2)
