ST. LOUIS - Things hardly could have been going better for Rams safety Quintin Mikell. He clearly was stung by the Eagles' lack of interest in re-signing him after 2010, when the led the locker room and went to his first Pro Bowl. He landed in St. Louis with a 4-year, $28 million contract - a deal the Eagles never would have considered - and found himself playing his first game against the team that nurtured him for 8 years. And everything was going right . . . before a 31-13 loss.

St. Louis Rams running back Steven Jackson ended his holdout yesterday while his agent continues negotiations for a new contract. The 235-pound Jackson, a bruising runner and the centerpiece of the team's offense, is entering the final year of a 5-year, $7 million deal he signed as a first-round pick in 2004. The Rams cut off negotiations in late July on the first day of training camp after agent Eugene Parker turned down a deal the team said would have put Jackson in the top echelon at his position.

GLENDALE, Ariz. - Patrick Peterson sure delivered a dramatic end to his team's six-game losing streak. ST. LOUIS - If you were expecting perfection from Nnamdi Asomugha, well, you're not going to get it. He is one of the best cornerbacks in the NFL, but cornerbacks get beat sometimes, and cornerbacks draw penalties sometimes, and cornerbacks miss tackles sometimes. Asomugha did all three in yesterday's 31-13 win over the Rams. Got beat in press coverage by wide receiver Brandon Gibson for a 31-yard completion. Got flagged for a 41-yard pass-interference penalty against Gibson that set up a Josh Brown field goal.

Ricky Williams, who has applied for reinstatement in the NFL after a 1-year suspension for substance abuse, could find a home with the St. Louis Rams. Coach Scott Linehan, the offensive coordinator when Williams played for the Miami Dolphins in 2005, said yesterday he'd consider adding Williams to the roster as a backup. The Rams need depth behind Steven Jackson. "He's proven himself with me," Linehan said. "I know there would be a certain amount of risk involved based on that, but I would just because he deserves that based on what he was able to do. " Williams, who will turn 30 in May, played in Canada last year and is eligible for reinstatement after April 27. Earlier this month Williams' agent, Leigh Steinberg, sent a letter asking that he be allowed to return to the Dolphins.

Here are my picks to roll, and get rolled, in Week 9. Watch 'em roll Philip Rivers, QB, Chargers at Redskins. After a torrid start to the season, Rivers cooled off considerably in the two games before the team's bye. Slot him back in your lineup against the generous Washington secondary. Le'Veon Bell, RB, Steelers at Patriots. His rushing score salvaged a rough outing against the Raiders last week. But despite Bell's struggles, the Steelers kept handing him the ball. That bodes well as the team heads to New England, which fields the second-worst run defense in the NFL. Ryan Mathews, RB, Chargers at Redskins.

SAM BRADFORD busted a lengthy slump with a 52-yard touchdown pass to rookie Chris Givens to help the host St. Louis Rams put away the previously unbeaten Arizona Cardinals, 17-3, on Thursday night. Robert Quinn had three of the Rams' nine sacks on Kevin Kolb to keep the Cardinals grounded. Arizona (4-1) scored at least 20 points in each of its first four games, but had no luck containing a pass rush that entered the game with only six sacks. Lance Kendricks caught a 7-yard TD pass in the first quarter and rookie Greg Zuerlein kicked a 53-yard field goal for the Rams (3-2)

ST. LOUIS - The St. Louis Rams fired coach Steve Spagnuolo and general manager Billy Devaney yesterday, 1 day after the team wrapped up the season tied for the NFL's worst record at 2-14. Rumors already are swirling that the Eagles may be interested in hiring Spagnuolo to replace defensive coordinator Juan Castillo. Spagnuolo was an assistant under longtime Eagles coordinator Jim Johnson and was defensive coordinator for the New York Giants when they beat Tom Brady and the previously undefeated New England Patriots in the 2008 Super Bowl.

ST. LOUIS - Nothing in the St. Louis Rams' first six games indicated they were capable of even keeping this one close. Maybe the crosstown Cardinals' pregame appearance with the World Series trophy inspired them to pull off a shocker of their own. A few choice words from their star player helped, too. Steven Jackson awoke in the middle of the night on game day, deciding he'd tell teammates enough was enough and that no way the Rams...

LOOKING BACK at the Eagles' 31-13 win over the Rams while wondering what Jay Paterno would be doing for a living right now if his father wasn't Penn State's head coach:   BY THE NUMBERS *  Because of the problems they had against the run, particularly early on, the Eagles stayed in their base defense much of the game. They used their nickel sub-package (two linebackers, five defensive backs) just five times in the first half and a total of 11 times in the first three quarters.

ST. LOUIS - This is how the Eagles pictured it. Their defensive line was in attack mode all Sunday, storming into the Rams backfield and making life miserable for quarterback Sam Bradford. The line sacked Bradford four times, three in the second half, and registered a bruising 11 quarterback hits. The line even produced the Eagles' winning points when Darryl Tapp stripped Bradford on a run play, and Juqua Parker scooped the ball and rumbled 56 yards to put the Eagles up by 14-7.
