You might be tempted to call Aerosmith vocalist Steven Tyler's current yen for a solo career - as a Nashvillian country singer, no less - quixotic. Tyler has taken his first solo album, We're All Somebody From Somewhere , on tour, and he landed Wednesday at the Tower Theater. It did have the air of a momentary excursion before returning to the Aero-mothership. But the show was pretty good. Lilting country treatments of Aerosmith tunes filled most of the night's set list. His backing band was Loving Mary, a three-male, three-female Nashville outfit, sort of an Allman Brothers and Sisters behind Tyler's still powerfully primal howl.

Could it be true? Could the crisis that has been sinking American Idol really be over? Seems we're halfway there: Variety says Steven Tyler has signed to replace Simon Cowell on Fox's talent show in a top-secret, yet-to-be-announced deal. "Steven is doing [ Idol ]," Aerosmith bassist Tom Hamilton told the Newark Star-Ledger late Wednesday. "The ink is dry on that. " Adds Hamilton, "I don't know if American Idol will be rock-and-roll enough for him, but it is an opportunity for millions of people to see another side of Steven Tyler.

AEROSMITH front man Steven Tyler has signed on to become an "American Idol" judge, as the Fox show hustles to replace Simon Cowell and Ellen DeGeneres . At least in this job, the big-haired, bigger-mouthed singer could remain safely seated. He's taken a few nasty tumbles during recent Aerosmith gigs, breaking a shoulder last autumn. His latest unintentional stage dive occurred Tuesday in Toronto as the band was performing "Love in an Elevator. " Video shows Tyler hip-bumping guitarist Joe Perry , who bumps back and sends the spindly rocker flying.

Jennifer Lopez, have you no shame?! Steven Tyler, have you, um, no shame either? Having used American Idol to resurrect their careers, the pair have dumped the Fox talent show. With Simon Cowell long gone, does Idol have long to live? J-Lo, who was in Philly on Thursday, reportedly made $12 mil for her Idol-atrous service. She announced her treachery by phoning in to stalwart Idol host Ryan Seacrest's radio show Friday. "I really was dreading this phone call with you," she told him. "I honestly feel like the time has come that I have to get back to doing the other things that I do that I've put kind of on hold because I love Idol so much.

What a must-see week we've had. Big-ticket events, breaking news, rock-star memoirs. It's been like TV's Lollapalooza festival. First, there was the royal wedding. I thought this was the rare sequel that was better than the original. I liked the new cast, and the music was much better this time around. And I loved that final flourish, when the happy couple unexpectedly circled the throng in that tiny clown convertible. It put an absurdist accent on the whole extravaganza. Before our hearts could return to resting rhythm, the president broke into prime time on Sunday to announce that a squad of Navy SEALs had assaulted a compound in Pakistan and killed Osama bin Laden.

Jay-Z and Beyoncé are showing their extraordinary love for new bairn Blue Ivy Carter by trademarking her name. The Washington Post says the couple's application to the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office states they want to use the moniker for a line of - no doubt groovy - baby carriages, baby cosmetics, diaper bags, and so forth. It's like my mom used to say: "Nothing says 'I love you' more than an aggressive marketing campaign. Mick Jagger has his work cut out for him when the Rolling Stones arrive in Philadelphia on Sept. 18. Because after Saturday's Aerosmith show at the Tweeter Center, there are a whole bunch of people walking around with the voice of Steven Tyler screeching passionately in their ears, and a pretty good idea of what rock-and-roll is supposed to feel like when it hits full throttle. The indefatigable Tyler, age 54, did the expected rock-star stuff - stalking the stage like a prowling cat, riding the scarf-adorned microphone stand like a rocking horse.

Kiss and Aerosmith toured together nearly 30 years ago, but they made strange bedfellows Friday at the Tweeter Center. Though fans in the Kiss Army (some with painted faces) and the Aero Force mingled harmoniously, the evening felt like a smackdown between bubblegum heavy metal and bluesy hard rock. Kiss' 75-minute show was straight out of 1978. Bassist Gene Simmons, guitarist Paul Stanley, drummer Peter Criss, and lead guitarist Tommy Thayer (in Ace Frehley's role) wore their usual Kabuki-inspired makeup, studded and spiked black leather, and ridiculously tall platform boots.

A BUNCH OF really funny people made news this week, as did one flub of historical proportions on a funny lady's derriere. Yesterday Stephen Colbert will play himself for a change when he takes the "Late Show" reins from retiring David Letterman next year. Insiders speculate the show will stay in New York. "The Voice" judge Blake Shelton announced he'll play a free beach concert at Caesars A.C. on July 31. Insiders speculate Shelton will not stay long on Absecon Island.

The great feud between two of entertainment's most prominent women is over. Relief and joy are ours. E! channel talk-show panjandrum Chelsea Handler and genius promoter (she is, she is, no matter what else one thinks) and faux reality-TV master Kris Jenner have kissed and made pancakes, it says here. For two years, Kris had been slowly, silently burning up over Chelsea's snark avalanche about the Jenner/Kardashian Dynasty . The two never spoke. But now - robins sing, pine trees chirp, bears cut a waltz in the brook.

"I am the last thing on this planet as far as being a racist," Steven Tyler said on Canadian TV in a quasi-apology to Nicki Minaj , we hope the last salvo in one of the sadder media smackdowns in recent memory. It began when Tyler, an American Idol alum, attacked the show's new judges as ignorant. "You just have to give your opinion. It wasn't hard for me," Tyler told MTV. "If it was Bob Dylan [competing], Nicki Minaj would have had him sent to the cornfield!" He added, "Whereas, if it was Bob Dylan with us, we would have brought the best of him out. " This put Minaj out of sorts.

Dick Clark on Saturday will mark the 40th anniversary of his televised Times Square bash, Dick Clark's New Year's Rockin' Eve . "There have been many memorable moments," Clark tells USA Today. "The year of the Iran hostage crisis [in 1980], the ball almost didn't drop," he says. The owner of One Times Square wanted to cancel to protest Iran's detention of 52 Americans. "The most nerve-racking would have to be the first New Year's Eve after the 9/11 tragedy," Clark adds. Clark says the popular show had its origins in Philly.
