In the middle of the summer high season, it seems you could walk from one end of the beach at Waikiki to the other without ever touching sand or surf because of the carpet of beach towels and bodies. At Kaanapali on Maui, the beaches are fronted by luxury hotels, and a boardwalk moves the hordes from spot to spot, beach to bar, sand to shopping. Finding a beautiful, nearly deserted beach isn't a tropical fantasy. You just might have to take a long, sometimes bumpy ride or a bit of a hike.

CAPE MAY POINT - Jeanette Bartolomeo spends hours each week staring at the tide on Sunset Beach, a tiny stretch at the tip of this tourist area. As jewelry manager for the Sunset Beach Gift Shop, she's looking for "Cape May diamonds," off-white stones rendered transparent in the wash of water and glinting sun. Dry, they are milky, nothing special. But when the stones are tumbled and polished, they gleam and shine. "There's definitely a trick to finding the diamonds. You've got to look at the edge of the water, where they sparkle," said Bartolomeo, who is 72 but looks like she's in her 50s. She became involved with the shop in 1991, after her daughter married into the business.

The beaches of the Jersey Shore get a lot of attention, and for good reason. It's hard to compete with endless waves and sand, and those toned lifeguards. But most of the towns that we of the Philadelphia area know as the Jersey Shore are made up of barrier islands, which means we can also enjoy the bays and inlets that separate those islands from the mainland. Sure, you can visit food and drink spots that take advantage of bayside views (Twisties in Strathmere and Mike's in Sea Isle, for example)

Finding a beautiful, nearly deserted beach in Hawaii isn't a tropical fantasy. You just might have to make a long, sometimes bumpy ride or a bit of a hike. But if you long to be alone, buy a good map and head for these places where you can still get lost in paradise. _ Kauai: Polihale Beach. A well-developed dirt road takes you the last part of the drive to the longest beach in the islands, so it's best to rent a Jeep or SUV - something with a little ground clearance. Officially, most rental-car companies say that the beach is off-limits - meaning if you get stuck, you are on your own getting out. But in more than a decade of visiting the beach, I've never had a problem with the road if I had the right kind of vehicle.

The sun cascading over a perfect blue sky that stretched endlessly over a deep-blue ocean was intoxicating. "Why aren't we getting married in Hawaii?" I asked my fiance, Michael. He reminded me of the church wedding we were planning, surrounded by all the people we loved. And that the choice had really been mine. Oh! But the tropical setting seemed created for a wedding, and we couldn't ignore all the signs that confronted us. The first sign was on Oahu, after a visit to Diamond Head, the extinct volcano.

As the sun melted into the Delaware Bay here at the southern tip of New Jersey, Marvin Hume looked up at the American flag flapping in a brisk sea breeze. Kate Smith's "God Bless America" projected over the speakers and onto Sunset Beach in front of him, where a crowd of 100 stood expectantly. Then came the National Anthem. When "Taps" began to play, Hume, 87, nodded at the man next to him. He held one side of a thick rope tight while the man tugged at the other, lowering the flag inch-by-inch.

Bill Vogt is fighting for the right to be nude on Higbee Beach. But his wife, Arlene, says she will settle for the right to go topless - just like her husband and other guys. Arlene Vogt, 37, took off her bikini top over the weekend on the once-but-no-longer-nude beach long enough for a police officer to give her a citation for being nude in public. "I pointed out I was in the same attire as my husband - a bikini bottom," Vogt said yesterday outside the Lower Township Municipal Court building, where she pleaded not guilty and requested a trial.

On what may be one of the last days for this quirky, mostly mellow community of nude sunbathers to gather at Higbee Beach without police ordering them to put something on, a few dozen people swam, baked in the sun, and reflected yesterday on the imminent loss of a decades-old tradition. "It's just another freedom being taken away," John Dustman of Wenonah said as he lay naked on his stomach beside his equally bare girlfriend just around the bend from Sunset Beach in Cape May Point.

At 7 p.m. yesterday, Marvin Hume, 77, watched as two children lowered the American flag near his store at Sunset Beach near Cape May Point. On the stereo, the Army band played the national anthem, then, "Taps. " Hume gathered the flag and folded it, and the 30 people in attendance turned to watch what remained of the sunset. So ended another Labor Day at Sunset Beach. So ended another summer at the shore. Hume and his family have maintained the flag-lowering tradition for 25 years.

So, you've got your mistaken identities, a young girl masquerading as a boy, an imperious mogul inspiring murder in his grown child, and star-crossed lovers. Shakespeare? No, Spelling. It's the bare-chested men, who jog rampant in Aaron Spelling's latest, Sunset Beach, that give the bard of Beverly Hills away. Sunset Beach, which airs at noon weekdays on NBC (Channel 10), is Spelling's first foray into the perilous shoals of daytime programming. There hasn't been a successful new soap in a decade, and NBC deep-sixed two in recent years, Generations and Santa Barbara - the latter being far superior, even in its initial weeks, to Sunset Beach.
