By George Parry On Saturday afternoon, well into my second full day of we're-all-gonna-die television coverage of the approaching Hurricane Irene, I sat in my Barcalounger feverishly loading banana clips for my assault rifle. Rivulets of sweat coursed down my face as Terror Track Weather warned yet again that Philadelphia was squarely in the path of a killer storm. "Dear," my wife said tenderly, "what in the hell are you doing?" I explained that I was preparing to deal with the looters who were sure to pillage the neighborhood in the storm's aftermath.

It was the perfect recipe for disaster: a slick road, a speeding SUV and a possibly drunk young woman behind the wheel, with two friends along for the ride. Those ingredients came together in Northeast Philadelphia early yesterday, and the result, police said, was the tragic deaths of two young women. About 2 a.m., the driver of the SUV apparently lost control of her vehicle and it struck a utility pole on Worthington Road near Byberry in Somerton. The impact was ferocious enough to shear off part of the rear passenger side of the vehicle and eject one of the passengers, identified by police as Caitlin Hennessy, 22. Hennessy, who had been sitting in the front-passenger seat, died of her injuries at the scene, as did the other passenger, Melissa Lees, 21, who had been sitting in the back of the SUV, police said.
