I PUT MYSELF on "Candy Crush Saga" probation. The moment of my self-directed timeout from the video-game app came when I almost - almost - made an in-app purchase to get more gold bars, lollipops, bombs, and jellyfish to help me finally conquer a level that had been vexing me for so long. The recurring appearance on my cellphone screen of "You did not clear all the jelly" was getting on my nerves. And for just $5.99, I could buy a "Mega Candy Starter Pack. " The red-tag-sale sign suggested it was a bargain.

At Pisker's Bakery on Delsea Drive in Westville, a wedding cake waits in a window as customer Ann Civalier of Deptford heads out the door into the sunshine, having settled for a more modest purchase of simply cookies. Catering to those with a sweet tooth, the bakery has been in business offering confections to the community for decades. It opened in 1925 and has had three owners - its current one is David Critch.

GROWING up in Southwest Philadelphia, Vincent John Poppa was a legend. Swedish fish? You got it! Pizza pretzel? Got it! Any retro '80s candy and ice cream was yours in Vincent's. I can still see his smiling face behind the counter (pre-bulletproof glass) when I walked in on the way home from school, or just on a lazy Saturday afternoon to satisfy my sweet tooth. Back then, Southwest Philly was safe. You could walk anywhere. So I'm not even going to use the name that these hoodlums are going by these days to satisfy their ferocious behavior.

What to eat : As far as we can tell, Sweet Box makes some of the best cupcakes in Philly: orange Creamsicle, chocolate peanut butter, thin mint, strawberries and champagne, chocolate Guinness Stout with whiskey filling and Baileys Irish Cream frosting, espresso hazelnut praline, bacon maple, beer infused, cayenne cinnamon. All served up by the lovely - yet extremely hardworking - Gretchen Fantini. If she doesn't make a flavor you like, your taste buds are on the fritz. Trust us. Don't miss: Based on the amount of strawberries Fantini purees, she believes her strawberries-and-champagne cupcakes are a best-seller.

SMOKING AND WEIGHT GAIN. What you've always suspected apparently is true - giving up cigarettes sharpens your sweet tooth. Eating sweets may relieve nicotine-withdrawal symptoms, say Maryland researchers, who speculate that the body may use the extra sugar to produce chemicals that help the brain get over the misery of doing without cigarettes. So when you quit smoking, reach for artificial sweeteners and avoid sweets. Chewing nicotine gum may help, too. FITNESS HOME SHOPPING. And if you quit smoking and do put on a few pounds, you can order all the exercise equipment you want by phone.

The Second Vatican Council of 1962-65 changed the way that Catholics mark the penitential season of Lent. But one reminder of the Lenten ways of previous generations survives. Hot cross buns. In the old days, Catholics who gave up sweets for Lent longed for each weekend, because Sunday was when they didn't have to give up what they were giving up the rest of the week. For those with an especially sweet tooth, hot cross buns were a treat. Thick. Sticky. Flavored with the candied fruits also found in Christmas cakes.

Hot Hot Heat couldn't have scripted more ideal circumstances for a follow-up to its major-label breakthrough, 2003's Make Up the Breakdown, a spring-loaded half-hour-and-change of snappy tunes recorded in six days. To develop the songs of the equally frantic, more developed Elevator, the four band members sequestered themselves in a barn in their hometown of Victoria, British Columbia, for six very productive months. They gave prospective song ideas and sonic approaches repeated white-glove tests while the folks at Reprise told them to take their sweet time.

Robert A. Waite, 79, a West Philadelphia dentist for 43 years who spoiled his daughter with candy on the condition that she brush her teeth after eating it, died Oct. 2 of a stroke at Chestnut Hill Hospital. He lived in West Mount Airy. "My father knew I had a sweet tooth. He worked long hours, and before he left his office, he would call me and ask if I wanted a treat," said daughter Roberta Lites. "My favorite was 'Now and Later' - probably the worst candy for your teeth. " Born in 1929, the son of a steel-mill worker, Dr. Waite was raised by his eldest sister in Youngstown, Ohio, after his mother died when he was 9. After earning a bachelor's degree in 1951 from Youngstown State University, he was drafted into the Army during the Korean War. Dr. Waite was a paratrooper and served stateside until being discharged in 1953.

In his convention speech, Gov. Bill Clinton invited Americans to come visit his home state of Arkansas. He said they'd enjoy it. Having been there several times, I agree. Especially if they meet Ol' Bud. Ol' Bud was my host when I went to Arkansas. He operated a fishing camp at the end of a dirt road in the Ozarks. But there was more to a trip than catching fish. On the last day, as the sun was setting, Ol' Bud would pound on the cabin door and say: "Moan, we gone potty. " (Translated: "Come on. We are going to party.

Excuses, excuses, excuses. "I'll start my diet next week, because my best friend is giving a party Friday and it'd be impolite not to eat all the food she serves. " Or: "My parents were heavy, so who am I kidding - it's in my genes. " And: "My spouse likes me this way. Really. " I've heard them all and then some - and uttered many of them myself. But I finally found a program that helped me put the excuses aside and lose weight. Lots of weight. For three months last year, I was a member of the "Lifesteps" weight management program at Hahnemann University Hospital.
